For all of those tC owners, here's the question:

    To Supercharge?

    -or-

    To Turbocharge?

    Discuss.

Right now, the highest known wheel hp achieved with the TRD charger is 311hp. With turbos, you can get up to 400 crank hp (not sure of the whp). Which is better? That's a matter of opinion. But the TRD charger is covered by the warranty so that's a plus.

Yeah, the fact that there is a warranty is a BIG plus.

But at the same time, a 4-5K price tag is something, especially with a Treadstone Turbo Kit going for 3K.

As I understand it, many of the things you have to do along with the TRD SC to get it to 311 will void it's warranty. If you get headers, the warranty is voided because you are exposing it to excessive heat. Lightened crank pulley, overdrive and underdrive pulleys are mentioned in the small print of the warranty. Also, I think the SC warranty is a lot shorter than the powertrain warranty of the car.

if you get the TRD supercharger installed from a Dealer you get a 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty on it. If you buy it over the counter you get a 12 month part warranty. And to be honest with you, with the parts warranty it can be hard to get it replaced under warranty cause most likely they will say that you installed it wrong or ran it wrong or something like that.

The act of getting the header installed wont void your warranty, However is there was a problem, say catalytic converter was to go bad and you came in to get it warrantied. When they see the header, they will decide not to warranty the converter and immediately place blame on the header. thus you will be stuck with a bad cat. This scenario replies to any aftermarket part you may choose to add to your vehicle.

Mine really dosn't leave the garage. People across the street think it is a tool bench.

So in a way, Toyota is trapping you in terms of having them install it because of the warranty?

Not to mention, it kinda puts a squeeze on wanting to mod the tC at all.

That's with any company. Doing drivetrain modifications will run the risk of voiding your warranty. I wouldn't worry about it much, I mean, it is a Toyota.

Well in that case bring on the TRD Supercharger!

There's alot of footwork in terms of choosing what's better for the performance and the wallet.

Personally, I'd feel more comfortable about the S/C because it is Toyota approved. Even though it costs more, it's good to have that peace of mind.

Actually, we've gotten more tC's in the last 6 months or so. And one of them has a build going on with the ZPI built long block mated with the T3/T4 hybrid. He did some prework with his tranny (LSD, clutch, flywheel) and suspension (Tein SS I think), so I can't wait to see what he can do.

actualy thats me bud ... hehe..... my cars been sitting the the driveway for a few weeks now... (knocking is for doors, its not a welcome sound when it comes from your car...)

I had that long block ordered, but after 3 weeks of waiting for ZPI to start, I desided to not go that direction, so I just ordered some race bearings and low compression pistons, and a new EMS.. it won't be quite as fast as I had orginaly planned (420-550)range... I think I can safely achive around 300-350... which (for the time being) is good enough for me!

Ive seen on the stock T-netics setup, 300HP with the EMS that I just bought, and with lower Compression pistons, I should be able to up the boost a little... so we'll see...

Haha, what's up Sham. When you gonna finish that beast? I'm takin a break with mine for a bit. After I finally got my car connecting to the internet, I figured I'd take a bit of a break. But I know in a few months, it's the tranny, open up the exhaust, and go to 10 psi. I was also going to spend quite a bit of time on the re-tune, so I can have a winter/summer map for 8.5 psi, and a summer/winter map for 10 psi. Figure if I have a computer in the car as a head unit, may as well do some data logging and Fuel Management switching when I want to. What EMS are you going with?
