Lets see if we can get this thread stickied.
Basically all the photographers of the board, and I know we have some bad ass ones here. Lets all post one photo a day, and at the end of a two month long period, we hold a voting session for the top 10 picks in a seperate thread. The winner of the voting recieves a prize, and the right to place IA's Best Photographer sig picture into their signature. Ill get with the other photographers to toss some money into a pot (not too much) and we'll figure the prize out. Im putting 10 bucks into the pot.
Please keep this thread on topic and conversations to a minimum. If you are not a photgrapher and responding to a photo. Quote the photo post, and respond to it with comments/likes/and dislikes. Photo number for voting will be the post number in this thread. For example, Estis Fatuus posts a photo in post 17 of this thread, the number for that corresponding photo is 17.
Some general rules for this contest:
-Post anything you wish. It can be automotive, people, etc. (must be safe for work and MUST BE YOUR WORK)
-Photos must have a signature to identify who took the photo
-Minimum post processing please! Contrast and Slight Level adjustments are okay. No advanced filters.
IT DOESNT MATTER IF YOU HAVE AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA OR NOT! SO DONT BE AFRAID TO POST YOUR WORK. THIS ISNT A CRITIQUING CORNER! Nobody will bash your photos.

POT MONEY
This thread will update with information about the prize and prize money donations:

How about you make an IA Best Photographer Trophy and each month you defend your title..?
or make a BELT!!! FTW!

Great idea!
Im gonna kinda go with the idea a little bit, and develop a signature that can be placed in the sig of the best photographer voted in instead. Plus the moneys won. This will happen in every 2 month periods.

sounds good
but what about the idea of every week, someone chooses a subject(like water) and u to post one pic of something that does with water
Nemesis
03-25-2006, 11:42 AM
Doing it weekly , people will get bored with it. When money is involved, people will get involved. Two months will get a lot more content than one week though.
So lets start posting some shots!

I skimmed through and looked at the pictures...so if someone has already mentioned this, I'm sorry...
But since your gonna make it a regular thing, why not make each contest have a theme (cars, people, landscape, certain color, whatever)? Also I don't like the no post editing rule...all photographers do post editing wheter it's on a computer or in a dark room. Not to mention it gives those with lesser cameras the ability to makw the photos compare to that of a high dollar SLR. :2cents: But I like the overall idea :goodjob:
And is there a limit on entries per person?

Awesome Idea!
I should have my D70 and the 18-200 vr lens in about two weeks, so I will be joining in.
Like it has been said, We NEED to have themes, to keep it somewhat in the same catagory and makes it easier to judge....I know this is a car forum but I really dont want to see all car pics you know?
I think it would be a lot better on a monthly deal, and each month will be a different theme!
I'm in. I'll have a pic in the next day or two.
I like the idea about themes... Keep it interesting and different...
Heres one for you i took a month or two ago...

What kind of background was this shot upon Danny?
A.P. Photography
05-23-2006, 09:52 AM
I like the pic Danny and the methods used but here is two things that bother me a lil about it. The background is way too brite, her shoulders blend in to the background but certain times of day this is unavoidable. The second thing is the angle of her head makes way to many lines in the neck area.
Danny
05-23-2006, 09:55 AM
What kind of background was this shot upon Danny?
Sky... The way the shot was setup is.. On my boat, there is a set of stairs going up to the fly bridge, I was kinda sitting towards the bottom and she is at the top. I got into a position soo the background was mostly blue sky with some clouds. THe sun was directly behind her, so i used fill flash to drop the background and correctly expose her face (to the best of my ability). The end result is what u see. I did NOT change the back ground, or really anything for that matter in photoshop (besides the obvious sepia effect and leaving the glasses as the appear in the original photo). I think the end result is half way decent.

dang, you got me there :( lol those are the two things that bug me... lol.. i like the back ground, but the shoulder was unavoidable. and the angle of her head was neccesary (read my above post about how the shot was done)..
ohh, and this photo was not planned by any means, it was one of those "hey, wait, smile!!!" shots, I had little to do with the pose. :D but yes, i might PS out some of those lines on the neck area, ill try that tonight.
thanks for the comments :D

ANyone know if part of my difficulty with night shots could be due to me using a stock lense? I've heard that it might help a lot to get a lense with a bigger f stop?

A lens with an F-2.8 will allow more light to pass through yes, but that just means you can shoot at a higher shutter speed. It may be time to sell that quantaray and invest in a new lens. If you still want a wide angle you have many to choose from.
My 50mm f1.8 is one of the best pieces of glass I have in my bag.

Not really, cause I'm not a nikon guy, but the 28-200 would be a great all around lens imo, but to be able to stop down to 2.8 would also be awesome. Really, you just have to think about what your primary purpose for the lens is going to be.

The 70/200 f2.8 would be a good fast lens. The 28/200 f2.8 across the zoom spectrum is unreal for action shots like the ones of the AMA, i think nikon and sigma both make one but they are expensive.

My Brother uses the sigma 70-200/2.8 on his 30D and loves it, but you need to keep another lens handy ie... 18-70 or what not. I use the 18-200 VR and I like it a lot, but it doesnt suit me for the buisness Im in. The "IS" for canon lenses and "VR" for nikons are not always the best way to go when the lens is only as fast as f/3.5 or 4.0 or whatever, a 2.8 lens will always be nice and to have the "IS" or "VR" on top of that will do the job for sure!

Downside is the IS adds quite a bit more to the lense. :(

Whoa there buddy. Why the hostility? My post wasn't even harsh? I never busted on his picture. It was a simple suggestion to learn to use the right white balance. A simple push of the button matching the type of indoor light would of fixed the color issue if he didn't already know that, which I assume he didn't know. It's ok. Your dad still loves you.
DrivenMind

My dad's dead, but thanks.
I know you didn't bust his picture, but you could have worded what you said a little differently so you didn't sound so condencending. Like maybe saying: "Hey man, check this out, there's a feature on DSLR's that allows you to compensate your picture's white balance, for different types of lighting."
All I'm saying is DSLR's are complicated, and not everyone knows how to adjust white balance right off the bat, so try to be a little more helpful.

why don't you explain 'white balance' for me? how to use it and why under what circumstances? i know i have that feature on my camera, but it's on 'auto'. didn't want to tweak anything i wasn't familiar with.
as posted, i 'just' got the camera meaning...i had just finished charging my virgin battery and took less than 50 fvcked up shots with it. the poodle one came out the best out of all the shitty ones i took
estis fatuus, thanks for understanding and the brief explanation there :goodjob:
here's another one...im just impressed with the clarity right now :D

quick question for the above pic, how do i blur out the background to exaggerate the subject a bit more? also, his nose is blurry...is that due to handshake or wrong focus point? the way it was shot, i focused on his eye.

To blur out the backgrounds you are going to need photoshop, do you have it? I can tell you how if you have it.

I wasn't trying to be a dick in my first post. I figured I would point out the white balance and you could look it up in your manual. I recommend you just take an hr or so and just sit down and read the manual and play with the camera at the same time, and possibly buy a basic photography book to learn what the basics are like aperture, f-stops etc..
All white balance is telling your camera what kind of light you are in. If you are in a room with regular light bulbs you would pick Tungsten(little light bulb), if you are in a room with fluorescent lighting you will pick the fluorescent WB setting, if it is cloudy outside you choose the cloud white balance setting, if you pop the flash out you would pick the Flash WB setting, etc... At times, the Auto WB can get it right and a lot of the times it will get it wrong like in your picture. As far as using it on your Canon, I have no idea. I have a Nikon. But it should be a simple push of the WB button while probably spinning the wheel to select the WB you want. Changing the WB setting won't mess your camera up or its settings. Just remember if you leave it set at a certain WB setting to change it back to auto or to what ever light condition it is. You will know if it is set wrong by the preview pic behind the camera once you take a pic and you realize it looks off.
Your camera came with the kit lens which can't really blur the background out like other lens at any zoom length. You could blur it out in PS but that is more of a pain. The easiest way is to backup as far as you can and zoom all the way into your dog from a distance and make sure the aperture is at its lowests F-Stop number which is probably F/5.6 on the Canon on full zoom. The pic above was at 18mm. Try zooming into him at 55mm and redo it.
The reason why it is blurry is because you have poor lighting in your room. In order to have a clear non-blurry picture, you need a still subject, which a dog is not, and your shutter speed needs to be at least a minimum to match or exceed the zoom length. For example, that pic you shot was at 18mm and your shutter speed was 1/15 which is lower than the zoom. It would have to be a tad higher like (1/20, 1/25, 1/30)and your probably would not have had any blur. Your camera was already set to ISO 1600 as well so it did what it had to do to get that shot in those poor light conditions. Only solution would be to use the flash, which would ruin the mood of the picture, or use a tripod which wouldn't have mattered since it is a dog and they do not want to stand still, or the best is to get a faster lens and shot the picture at f/2.8 and the shutter speed would have been a lot faster resulting in zero blur.

^ that was such a great lecture. straight-forward and easy to comprehend. thanks :D

Since you are kinda new to the dslr world, download this DOF(Depth of Field) pdf document. It will give you a brief understanding of F-Stops and Shutter speeds and how they correlate together. It is really a helpful document. It's mainly pictures with blurbs below so no real boring reading is involved. This should really give you a good understanding once you are finished looking through it. It is 30 megs. Download it.
Right click save as.

Just a suggestion guys.
Let's start another thread and we can go into it deeper and more in detail.
Very good write up Dean.
If we start a new thread, the first thing we need to know to help anyone is what kind of camera they are shooting with. Nikon and Canon are different, although they have the same kind of settings. Very different ways to find it on each.

Wrong, thats cheating.
You need to read Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson, he never edits his photos!

Imbosile is a pretty good shot from what he's posted on here, so I think he misunderstood the question. Maybe he thought "blurring the background" was the photoshop technique like Jorge uses after the fact to soften the background around the subject. Kinda like what he did to the pic of me and Sam racing.
I'm sure he knows that to do it with the camera you just have to put a little distance between the subject and the background and crank down to a shallow DOF on your cam, right Imbosile?

Yes, thanks for backing me up, I understand how to do it with a camera but I was referring to photoshop because the guy already posted the finished picture and wanted to know how to blur the background. If the photo is already taken, the only way I know how to blur stuff is through photoshop.

i know this picture if out of focus due to shake or distance, but is the setting appropriate? anything you would've done differently? centering, WB etc. it was taken this morning in my backyard before heading to work.

shutter speed: 1/250
aperature: 5.6
iso: 200
focal length: 43mm

What kind of camera? I dont have an EXIF reader at work anymore.
The photo has really good bokeh, I like how most of the subject is still in focus. If it isnt what you intended then your focus bracket was probably at the incorrect spot, happens all the time. Shutter speed is okay, photo seems a little too warm for my taste, but some might like it for that photo. Quite honestly though, its a really nice shot.

Since you are new to dslr's, you might want to try and use Av or Tv modes to see what shutter speed works with what aperture and vice versa, instead of manual mode. This is just a suggestion, because I am in the same boat as you. I am fairly new to dslr's and I tend to get much better pictures in Av or Tv, then in manual where I have to set both (although your settings look fine).
Also, depending on how bright it was outside when you took the picture, you may have been able to bump the iso up to 400 to get a faster shutter speed to make up for any shake or movement.
Edit: George, he has a XTi and you make a good point about the focus bracket.
