that picture turned out exactly the way i wanted... thanks for the good words:D i was actually focusing on the center of the picture. somehow the focus is on the left side  maybe i was a bit too close and the cam wacked the focus to the side. it looks awesome on my camera, but when transferred to the computer...not really the way i wanted.

i'm trying to stay away from the auto, av, tv modes etc., but i could probably familiarize myself with the 'correct' settings on av/tv modes and tweek it here and there in the manual.

I have read the Photographer's Handbook Third Edition by John Hedgecoe. It's a decent book overall with bunch of compared illustrations. :goodjob:

imbosile..... I wasnt bashing you, the photo you posted is a nice shot, I thought you were thinking to single out the subject you had to photochop it. But I know what you are talking about now. If you havent, you need to read the books by Brian Peterson!

Here are a few Random shots I had...

Took this tonight, trying to make a new wallpaper for my home PC.

No photoshopping , except for a resizing and signature addition.

No added blur, just pure bokeh from the prime.

took this last night in front of the car garage. any suggestions for an improvement?

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/dp32185/IMG_0033.jpg

is this glare due to my factory canon lens being the way it is? or photographer error? i took more pics with the lights on and the glare exists in all angles!

Lens flares are 99.9 percent of the time attributed to glass quality, not user errors. When I was in the market for a wide angle lens, I purchased a Sigma 15-30mm (Around $400). It was okay until you got anywhere near a light source, then it was flare city. The blue spheres were not something I wanted to clone stamp out of every shot. I decided to see what the next higher up model , the Sigma 12-24 HSM would perform, and its 97 percent flare free. But it cost me 200 more in the end.

To blur out the backgrounds you are going to need photoshop, do you have it? I can tell you how if you have it.
buy a 50 1.8 and you wont have to do it ghetto
or any low aperature lens for that matter

Read my post responding to that, I know how to not do it "ghetto". I was just telling him how because I figured he wanted to blur out the background on the picture he already had taken.

But yes, I would like to get a 50, 1.8 sometime.

Everyone who sees it thinks it's fake/photoshopped. It's real. It is supposed to be used for as a flower pot. The saucer and cup are attached. It's not as big as it appears to be. I would say it's about 7-8" tall.

I called them one day to get their permission to do a photoshoot there one day. It wasn't for anything fancy or anything, as a matter of fact initially it was for someone's personal use. I actually just wanted to know if they would let me take pics in a certain area with the carvings in the background. You know what they told me? "Ummm, you can't do that unless you pay us $______ (can't remember now what number they said but it was something ridiculous) AND you have to show us the pics before we sign off on it"......yep, that's what they said.

I went up there anyway and took the pics. Before too long Stn. Mtn. police came up and asked me what I was doing. I told him taking pics. He basically recited the exact same thing I'd gotten over the phone.

I was being a smarty pants, but it is a true story what happened to me.

Well that's also partly my fault too. I brought my tripod, big lens, camera bag, yada yada.....and we were also in a deserted parking lot with the mtn in the background.....I guess I deserved attracting unwanted attention too.

I just thought it was gay of them to make such a big damn deal when I called. It sucks too because I live literally a rocks throw away. I hear the fireworks every night. Oh well, screw 'em.... :tongue1:

I was being a smarty pants, but it is a true story what happened to me.hahhah, pwnd by stone mountain...If you want to shoot there let me know. A retired police chief of atlanta who then became head of security at the park [Director of Administration & Public Safety?] has filmed and photographed me rock climbing...then invited me to go off the face at stone mountain (either side of the carving). I'm sure he's retired now but I can make a call ;)

In order to film or take photos at Stone Mountain Park companies/individuals must first obtain approval from the Park. Due to the volume of requests about filming and photography on-Park, all requests must be submitted in writing at least 14 days prior to the shoot. In most cases, the Park does charge a location fee. Rates vary according to scope and details of specific projects. There is also a location fee for wedding-related photography (unless the wedding/reception is being held at Stone Mountain Park).

To submit your request, e-mail [email protected] or fax 770-413-5059. Your Memo/Letter should detail date and time of shoot, crew size, number of vehicles entering Park, desired location(s) for filming/photography, Start/End times and list of equipment to be used during shoot. Also, include how the photos/film will be used.

Yeah I guess I could see where they were coming from, but there is no reason for them to get all crazy and throw out an outragious price just to be able to shoot. I had the samething happen to me at Chota falls in Clayton Ga, the lady was nice about it I suppose. She just said I needed to make an apointment, but said nothing about a fee.

I like his new sigma a lot, its a very nice lens.it's wayyy to slow...the Canon series III 70-300 is supposedly alot faster and you can get them for like $150. I'm just looking for the best deal on a 70-200 f/2.8L and a 1.4x L for it.

70-200 f/2.8L and a 1.4x L for it.

You'll love the quality of the shots. I have it and the 1.4 and 2.0 extenders. The extenders only work right with the non-IS models though. I've never used my extenders yet, although your moon shot got me to thinking.... :D

Ironically enough, I shoot a lot more with the much smaller lens though. It's a little more versatile for when you need a wider FOV. The 200 lens is awesome though for like car events and stuff when you need the distance.

BTW, I've seen a bunch of 70-200 2.8's on Ebay a lot. That's probably going to be your most economical choice, although as you know you have to be careful who you get it from. I have seen lots advertised as new though, so that could possibly be a safer bet for internet buying.

yeah its tuff to find a good deal in a 2.8 lens. His new Sigma wasnt to bad for what it is, I think he paid $750+ for it, but the problem he ran into was trying to find it. took him two weeks and finaly found one in Orlando (wolf Camera) No one would help him locate one, so he just called store after store!

That one is just as bad finding as the 18-200 VR

Just go to the main camera stores on ebay, they normally are listed down the left hand side of the screen under the advanced search list. I buy a lot of my stuff from these stores.

lol..... Well Im sure you could take a tripod, but I dont know if you would have enough time to use it. I dont know if you could still do it with a monopod. I had one in the car that day.

So did you go through it without going with a tour guide? That would be awesome. I just thought it was mandatory!

Now that yall are talking about monopods.....I picked me up a new one the other day. It's a Manfrotto with the trigger and ball head. I like it a lot. It's very light and works good. I wanted the one that is both a mono and a tri, but they didn't have it in stock and I'm an impulsive buyer.... :D I think that would be cool because it's the best of both worlds.

I also saw a very pimp CF monopod that was even lighter than mine, but was crazy expensive too. I had to leave that one wit 'em. :D

BTW, I'm claustrophobic and Ruby falls was murder on me, although I bet pics in there could really be incredible. I was just happy to get out alive....

This is the best I could do with no pod and pretty dark lighting, 5sec shutter, and a railing to shoot from!

The first one is pretty good though....some people arnt up for the fisheye look on shots like that, but its like everything else.....There opinion! I want a fisheye, but its prolly after a few other lense first. Try using the fisheye on singled out items/things, like an old house, look down on a dog and snap one, its hilarious...or any animal at that. Its more of just a fun lens....

Goodjob!Late afternoon sun was behind me, the first time i tried to shoot it was a couple weeks ago and mid morning with sun was behind the waterfall...the actual falls was dark and shadowed and the top was blown out with lens flares everywhere. This time I went up there not knowing how much battery i had left and ended up pulling of 6 shots before it died, with this one being the first of those 6 haha.
