Photographers: Photograph a Day

My wife wanted to have good photos of the kids, and we needed better photos to document genealogy, so I went out and got a D5100, and a couple of lenses, then just keep expanding. Just added a Nikon 35mm film setup in the last few days - N70 w/ Tokina 19-35, Tamron 28-200 (A03), and Nikkor 50 1.8. I've shot over 5,000 shots in the past 2 months, including 3 photobooks and a DVD. I've been doing some video editing also, but all of it is mostly family stuff, and not what I would post publically.

Memorial Hall at Stone Mountain Park. See mountain reflected in glass.

Bought the Sigma, took it down to Stone Mountain to see how it worked in reduced light. This was taken late in the afternoon, after the sun had gone behind the mountain.
Slight curve at the edges due to the lens, very little falloff at f/7.1.

Start cheap. Get an older 35mm film camera, and then a couple of used lenses, then add reflectors, then flashes. I have a Nikon N70 that I like to shoot some. Wolf, CVS, Walgreens, etc, all convert to CD cheap, but you can send to North Coast Photo in Carlsbad, CA, to get 25MP scans (better than most professional digital cameras).

Yeah my buddy's wife shoots 35mm now and she said it wasn't all that expensive to begin with. I just want to finish up my car and then get the bike under the knife so I can be finished with both. Maybe then I will consider it.

Is that wide open? How do you like it compared to the Nikon 50 1.8g?

yes its wide open at 1.4, the two dont compare. i have had 2 nikon 1.8's and didnt like either of them. when you get past the sharpness of this lens, then you get to the size and feel of it. i will never get rid of this lens.

Went to a friend's office in Vinings on Saturday, shot some photos even though it was very hazy and cloudy (still could see 8 miles away though). Processed a few in PhotoMatrix Pro. These two were with the Sigma 10-20mm.

AT&T Tower and Bank of America tower in Midtown Atlanta. Bird's distance from shooting location was 8 miles. Conditions were harsh, shooting handheld on 500mm mirror lens through the office window's tinted glass. Day was cloudy and dark, and extemely hazy - pretty much the worst conditions. In color the photo didn't look to good, so I converted to B&W to make it still usable.

The water tower at the Lockheed Martin plant in Marietta. Was very hazy and about 5 miles northwest of the building that I was on. I think that is Kennesaw Mtn in the background (not sure).

I let Photomatrix process it pretty heavily. On the first one, I only used two of the three brackets. On the bottom one, I used all three intentionally, and cranked up all of the saturation, lighting, contrast, etc.

Off camera flash experimentation.

First 2 shots - old meets new. My SB-800 on top of my old Star D tripod.
Flash used has a Rosco green gel on the YN-560 flash, popped from the radio poppers. This let the wall in the background take a darker tint, rather than just an off-white.

I saw the posts on NikonCafe and know about the fstoppers ones also, but personally, I think that your processing was fine - I think that the real issue is that Atlanta's cityscape is just not very engaging and interesting like a lot of other citys. Face it, when you ask someone that doesn't live in Atlanta to name famous buildings in citys, they will respond with the Sears Tower in Chicago, Alcatraz in SF, Empire State builgin in NYC, etc., but they usually can't name a building in Atlanta. Atlanta doesn't even have a real style to its buildings like Miami's beach hotels. That's not your fault and nothing that you can fix, obviously.

When I was in Hong Kong, most of the people hadn't even heard of Atlanta, and that was just a few years after Atlanta hosted the Olympics. They all knew LA, Miami, NYC, etc.

thanks man, you may be right but i truly want to believe that its possible to make a good photo out of something that is not as engaging. I never thought about it from your perspective though and might have to start thinking of alternative ways to make Atlanta's less than memorable city scape more pleasing.

Panning is a lot easier with a better quality monopod than my cheap one. Allows slowing down the shutter to get some prop blur.

Get Adobe Lightroom. Pretty simple and you can always work you way up to PS.

Cabin was built in 1858 by my ancestors. We have added power, heat, plumbing, etc. I'm pretty sure that they would have liked to have had these amenities/necessities back then also.

Photos were taken in the early morning, and processed with SilverEFX. I did them a couple of different ways. I like the B&W versions more than the color versions.

Once I get more comfortable with it, I plan to take my grandfather's old 1940's MF film camera down there and shoot it in B&W, but I'm sure that I'll have to take my old N70 for backup. :-)

yea the first three pictures i posted i did not realize that the wb was set on some odd setting. its a new to me camera. say 3 days so far. the bumble bee picture is with wb set on auto. i bought a lens from someone and he noticed how the wb was set from looking through some of the pics i did. still learning on it lol

If you don't have any processing software, you can d/l GIMP for free. It's what I use because I don't really do any crazy editing (not yet). It has a pretty good wb correction tool in it.

Nikon D600, Nikon 24-120 f/4 VR, shot at 38mm, ISO 250, f/11. Processed in LR and NIK Silver EFX.
What I didn't do is clean the sensor ahead of time, so I'm not really happy with the shot. I'll reshoot it in the future.
