Dang!! 420ft?! How far is that from Atl? I went to the one in north ga. Im in on that other one though!
Well I guess we didnt miss much though. There was another waterfall on the trail, I tried to climb down the side but it was real muddy and we were pressed for time, but it looked like a good one from what I could see...
I didnt do the HDR, I had a soft filter on the camera. For some reason I never use a tripod or photoshop my pictures. I usually downsize, contrast, and border them and thats it. I am gonna start messing around with HDR though, there are some amazing pics out there with it.
Well I should have my D300 in few weeks...haha cant wait! Then I gotta get the sigma 10-20 lense and then after that one, I have to get the new Sigma 50-500 thats out.... Have you all seen that thing? Its sweet!Caesars Head State Park...

I got on and checked that one out last week, and it is the stair step style waterfall,I love the drop off's alot better. It didnt look like from the pics that there was a good spot to shoot from, may just have to check it out anyway.

Not really, we just hit the upper falls. It is a 3/4 mile hike to get to the upper falls, and 1/4 mile hike to the lower falls. A group of us spent the days hitting different waterfalls. I will post a couple more tonight. We hit 3 different falls.

well I have about $1600 in bestbuy cards, and they're service plan is insane! 4 year plan for $149 with no questions asked! If you drop it but you see nothing wrong with it, you can take it to bestbuy and exchange it for a new one anyway. Instead of nikons warranty that takes over a month to do anything!

The backdrop is the white paper backdrop that you can get at any camera store (nothing special).
Lighting:
The JTL strobe to the left was about 3 feet away from the pizza and 2 feet above it. It was fired through a white umbrella.
The JTL strobe to the right was about 2 or 3 feet away and the middle of the umbrella was level with the pizza.
The Canon 430EX on the camera was aimed up above the pizza to blow out the background (backdrop).

Would you guys mind posting up what tripods you all use?
I have a Manfrotto, it was really cheap (I think it was $80), and I am really sick of it. I actually never use it because it really doesn't support the weight of my camera and a lens. Every picture I take with it comes out blurry, and yes I am using a Nikon Remote to fire the camera. Oh well, just wondering what you guys recommend.
I was actually searching for a new tripod, but I bought a window mount instead. Im just using two different cheapos, that were like $20-30. I was bidding on a sweet carbon fiber one with a ball mount already on it for $60 on ebay, but I was out bidded and just didnt try hard enough....
Just get on ebay and snoop around, that setup I was bidding on was worth close to $200 but I could of prolly got it for about $80

My first HDR attempt, I know it isn't good. But any helpful criticism would be nice. I know as a general rule you are supposed to take pictures at -2EV, 0, and +2EV, where do you read these values on the camera? When I did this, I focused on the city skyline in the distance and took a shot (0), then I went up 2 clicks on the shutter speed, then down 2 clicks on the shutter speed to get my 3 images. But that ended up only being -.34EV and +.34EV.

Imbosile- I really like this shot but the flare is killing me. Maybe try a slightly different angle so that the flare if there is one would be easier to fix instead of being in the middle of the tree. The flare on the right side of your picture is minimal and should be easy to fix. I would also clean up the lines from the fisheye lens on the bottom right corner so that it looks more like the rest of the corners. I think you did a good job with a subtle HDR because most people overdo them.

Thanks for the feedback. As for the flare, I honestly expected it to be worse haha. I was using a $42.00 adapter that goes on the end of your lens. I want to go back to the same spot and give it another try, this time taking a broader range of photos than before. Thanks!

The only reason you only come out with 2 shots is because you didnt hit your perfect exposure shot. I normally do 5exp HDR pics which is -2ev, -1ev, perfect exp, +1ev, +2ev.
does the D50 not have AEB on the camera? If so it should only have upto a 3 shot Bracketing just like the D70s, the D300 has up to a 9 shot Bracketing which is unreal.
If you are in a spot which has a lot of shadows and dark spots, you will need 5-7exp in you bracketing. You can choose if you want a .5ev or 1ev, or 2ev, betweent each exposure. Normally 1ev is good. With your picture of the city, 3exp was fine, -1ev, perfect exp, and +1ev.... also try a 5 shot as well. Make sure you use the tripod always, low ISO and 20+ on your f/. If I was you, I wouldnt use that wide angle/fisheye lens, or at least crop out the rounded black edges.....
Edit.... I just noticed you did say you took the three shots and you hit (0) first.... Just start out on your (-) exp first then go up from there. Which means your shots go from Darker to lighter

Okay so I was just messing around with bracketing (I've never used it before), looks like I can only do a 3 shot bracket. My bracketing options are 1/2 or 1/3 step. I have it set on 1/2 step currently. I also have it set to do a 2.0 Step Auto Exposure & Flash bracket.
Now I took 3 pictures, it automatically did the one at the correct exposure, then it did one at -1.74 and + 2.13, why would it not take the pictures at even increments?
Also, I got to a "menu" on the information display on the top of the camera where I can cycle through -5.0, -4.5, -4.0, etc, etc, 0, etc, etc, +4.0, +4.5, +5.0. My was set on +2.5, but I can only get to this menu when I am in Aperture Mode, can someone tell me what this is? And what should it be set on?

Just manually do it...you can tell what's under or over-exposed and manually shoot to compensate.
Yeah that sounds like the best option, that will allow me to shoot more than 3 shots if I want to.
Yeah I had to manually do it on the D70 If I wanted to shoot more then 3 shots.
The menu you were talking about sounds like your correct/perfect exposure menu... That should be set right at (0), If it is set at +2.5 and you go take a picture in mid day and you have it set on (0) in the view finder, it actually takes the picture and it comes out 2.5 stops higher.... try setting that on (0) and see how it turns out.
If you are wanting to continue using HDR, you need to purchase Photomatix software. Its an HDR software and its better then CS3's HDR setup.
They have a trial version, but it watermarks they're name in three different places on the photo, but it will give you an idea on how it works. When you go to start the program up it will pull up a menu and it ask you about a quick tutorial, click on that and it will help you out tremendosley(spl) on the steps to take in that software... it will take about 5-10minutes
This pic was actually the correct exposure shot of 3 bracketing pics...
It was a little dark and the shadows were killing it using 3 shots(should of been 5-7 shots) so I figured I would just use a normal exp.

Hmm, so I wonder if the entire 2 years I've had this camera if my pictures have been coming out 2.5 stops higher than they should. That would really suck. Thanks for pointing that out though. Yeah right now I am just using CS2's HDR setup, I redid my previous one and I am working on a few things right now. I'll post it up soon and you guys can tell me if you think it's a little better. Thanks so much for the help.

I tried cleaning up the flare in the tree, and I took out the rounded edges from the lens. I thought it looks good in sepia, but thats just me. There was not much difference in your exposures either. Just remember that your darker exposure fixes all the overexposed, and lighter exposure fixes the underexposed. The reason for HDR is, when your out shooting and you see an amazing landscape but if you go to take a few shots of it with a correct exposure your skies might be to bright and white, or your shadowed places will be black. They say HDR pretty much is what you see in person with your naked eye and how the eye can focus and adjust to everything. A lot of people get to crazy with it most of the time, but there are some out there that are just amazing.

More the merrier! 5 is usually the best. I will shoot 9 sometimes, depends if there is a lot of shadows or not.
If its bright outside then just make sure your -ev is low enough. shoot one at -2 and see what it looks like, then maybe try a -2.5 and see what that does. Just as long as you can bring all the overexposed to a resonable exposure...
How are you processing these?

Yeah mine only goesup as high as 2 and as low as -2 so anything in between I can do, unfortunately since its just a p&s. Im using Photoshop Cs2 9.0 for em, then slightly editing the curves a little, but im not doing as much as I want to.

Are you loading the photos through Automate, Merge to HDR, load the photos, come back to main screen click on image, then mode, then 16bit, it will open a box, and you want to click on I think its called Local adaptation, your photo will be all out of wack, click on the histogram link in that box, click bottom of histogram and slide the bottom over to the start of the shadow, anything after that is up to you and what you think looks good. Everything I just said is through CS3 so I hope its close to CS2....
Is that what you were doing? I wasnt happy with the results of HDR photos though PS though!

Yeah Ill have to try that. I was only going as far as after loading the images to merge int hdr, and then editing the curves slightly. Mauybe thats why it didnt turn out quite right either.

Yep, here's another shot from the same location. I did not size it right when I uploaded it so if you want to see a big version click here (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2211/2375320325_a90978d2b6_o.jpg)

Besides the small amount of city lights through the windows it was completely dark. My flashes were hissing and squealing after this shot. It took 4 tries to get a picture that I felt had the correct lighting. I started out at the far left of the frame with 2 Nikon SB25 flashes. I walked parallel with the train alternating the flashes as I walked. After that I walked back aiming the flashes up. Camera settings (http://flickr.com/photo_exif.gne?id=2375320325)

No, Save up and get the 18-200VR well worth it, and then go for the 10-20mm.
My next will be the 10-20mm, and then the 50-500mm

VR just stands for Vibration Reduction which help to steady the lens 2-3stop higher than what you are on.. basically allowing you to get a steadier shots at higher shutter speeds..

No definitely not, they do offer it on some of their top of the line lenses. But you can also get it on the cheapies. The lens I got was only 179.99 at Wolf. I was really surprised because they actually had the cheapest price of all the places I checked. (Showcase, Amazon, B&H, etc.)

I had a similar experience with the Sigma 10-20mm lens. The price difference was marginal between picking it up at Wolf and buying mail-order so I went to Wolf.

It is a great lens. I like the distortion when taking up-close shots of an entire building. I have only used it once so I can't say if that will eventually get on my nerves but so far it is cool. I posted a couple pictures from the lens:
