    Default How to improve Atlanta

I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks that the city needs improvement on.

I personally think that we need to expand Marta out into the larger suburbs and increase the capacity for it. It would help solve some of the traffic and pollution problems if only people would use it.

I also think we need to find a way to improve our water situation. While we have been getting above average rainfall for this year so far, I doubt it will continue into the summer months. We need to find plans to keep this water while we have it.

    What does everyone else think?

You pointed out what I was going to say. If you look at any other major city, they have outstanding mass transit systems. Atlanta does not have even a marginal one.

finish the sidewalks. I swear, every where in Gwinnett and surrounding areas, there are like 5 blocks and then a bunch of grass..then half a mile later a couple more blocks.

I really wish they would spend some money to improve the public transportation, because I would much rather take Marta or another train back and forth from school. I already ride my bike to work except when it rains.

I agree with you- all the best cities have a good mass transit system that is easy to use- we suck at it. I really think it holds the city back

There's no way roadworks can keep up with the ever-increasing # of cars on our roads. Due to the relatively low cost of living compared to other big-10 cities, most of us prefer to have more than 1 car per person. Increasing the width of I75/85/285 to even 10 lanes is only a temporary solution. The only real solution is to build a better MARTA system that reaches the areas where a vast population of Atlantans live, viz., Marietta, Sandy Springs etc. Encourage people to travel by public transport and make the train/bus combo the real lifeline of the city. I'm all for levying road tax/toll during weekday rush hour. Something along the lines of London/Manhattan (NYC) would be great. Enforce a strict "left lane is for passing only" rule. Give the left lane mofo sitters a straight 6 point ticket. That way we won't have people queuing up in all lanes. Increase the speed limit to 75mph and enforce that.

And for the love of God, stop putting up construction zones in every farking corner. Construction zones are for "construction" and not for enforcing a freakin speed zone. If you're gonna expand the road in '09, put the damn cones up in '09 and not in '07. The downtown connector is an absolute mess. I have to leave home an hour in advance for getting to the airport on Monday mornings, something that used to take 20 odd minutes until late last year.

I'm serious about the construction just because if any one has paid attention, Atlanta is going to be doing road construction @ night and on the weekends from now till the end of summer....which means that traffic is going to SUCK! I was coming down 85S and looked on 85N and it was backed up an easy 15miles...I wish they'd just finally end it..I mean I understand what they are doing needs to be done, but Jesus lol

Thats why Cobb County wouldn't let Marta build a station here in the first place. But crime isn't exactly any better in Cobb than it is anywhere else around Atlanta.

    Valid point. +1

Until the stupid city and surrounding county legislators get their act together and put aside all racist hatred BS, municipal fund crap and general fck-you-fck-me sh*t, none of our ideas will even be heard, let alone implemented. Their callous attitude has already put ATL at #2 (or #3?) on the 'cities with the worst traffic jams' list. Need further proof? ATL wasn't anywhere close to the top 10 cities for worst traffic jams in '04, jumped straight to #4 in '05, pushed aside DC some early last year and is now trying to take the infamous crown from LA. Oh, and ATL's drivers are amongst the 10 worst drivers in the nation. Brilliant stats, I must say.

No on expanding Marta, no thanks at all. Really the only way to fix problems in Atlanta is to elect people with IQs above 100 into office. In particular, the city council, the GDOT, and Marta are run by complete idiots.

Its sad that in London where their rail system contains like 100 different rail lines, they never fail to have each and every train there on time. Yet the idiots at Marta can't even manage 4-5 lines, its ridiculous.

an expansion of the rail system is important to this and every other major city in the US.
in NY, 50% of residents dont even own cars due to the fact that----"WHY? the rail takes me wherever i need to go....ANYTIME." CHICAGO_ though they have people driving in from gary, indiana/ waukeagan, wisconsin they still have a transit system that runs 24/7.

when i moved here('94) i thought it extremely frickin retarded to have a
"MAJOR" city like atlanta, known for partying til dawn, a place where somethings always going on at anytime/day of the week, to have a rail system that dumps you off at midnight...2am at the latest.

expansion of the railways well beyond it's present size needs to happen. we'd all stand to benefit from that.

i think it's funny the counties that didnt want to be involved, citing "increased crime", turned around and created their own transit systems and where to the riders end up? ON MARTA.

Atlanta's rail system is flawed for the fact that the city was built first then they said, "oh, let build a rail system". It does not work like that, NYC and Chicago systems started getting built in the early 1900's way before population boomed, while MARTA is not even 35 years old. How will they go about expanding the system? Working underneath a city that has bad traffic on a good day, dont even hold your breath for and upgrade. IMO a city's rail system is supposed to be built first and then you expand to accomdate population boom, not the other way around.

True, but if the city spent some money on Marta instead of constantly upgrading the highways, it would essentially kill two birds with one stone - alleviate highway traffic and decrease pollution significantly.

Like Ahmonrah said, most of the counties that didn't want Marta here have their own public transportation (like CCT here in Cobb) that actually connect with Marta anyways.

Ironchef, how would replacing people in those positions help?

turbosx, why do you think we need to remove people?

You shouldn't post until you actually know what you're posting about. Atlanta had the same form of rail system that other cities had back in the early 1900s. In fact, trolleys came into Atlanta as early as the late 1880s and ran through the 1940s. They were called trolleys and Atlanta had trolley lines back then. Know your history, dummy.

That's possible. But if that's the case, ATL dropped out of the top 10 during the early part of this decade. From my source on the web for 2005 (http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/arc...worst_traffic/)

Dumbass, is a trolley a subway? NO a subway travels underground not on the street and it does not have cables. A trolley system is not that hard to accomplish, know your facts buddy. SUBWAY is the key word not TROLLEY
Since you need special attention, I meant the rail part of MARTA, I know its not 70-80 years old

I read and re-read your attempt at obtaining, miserably, an ounce of intellectual respect on here to see where you slightly mentioned subway. I have even re-quoted you so that you may be able to point this out to me, an avid and learned reader, the point in which you stated "subway."

How will they go about expanding the system? Working underneath a city that has bad traffic on a good day, dont even hold your breath for and upgrade. IMO a city's rail system is supposed to be built first and then you expand to accomdate population boom, not the other way around.

After a fourth time perusing, vehemently, your fable, I still come up with nothing. I never even spotted your "key" word. Please indulge my request and point it out to me. If you can, I will apologize for every disparaging remark thrown your way by me.

Know my facts, huh? It seems my "facts," as usual, far outweigh yours, little boy. Where I have completely obliterated your "solution," you have done nothing to add comprehensibility to the question at hand. in other words, the only question you need to try and work on is..."Why am I such an idiot?"

Tis best to fight back when you have a vast armament to do so or you will end up digging your own grave. Later, QD.

growing up in Chicago we had the trains that would take you anyplace in the city. I used to get on the trains and goto Cubs and Sox games all the time. On top of the trains we had the bus system that you could get from where I grew up in Blue Island all the way out to Kankakee with 3 transfers. Its over 40 miles straight line and took about 4-5 hours to get that far, but it was possible. 1 thing that ATL could do to aleviate some of the traffic, especially downtown is add a elevated train system. There would be less impact on the streets than construction would and would get alot of people off the streets in the downtown area.

But a majority of illegals arent worth much. and some should replace the legal us citizens.dont get me wrong but public transportation is not the problem.I mean it a big problem. But if we had people that had common sense while driving, government that made things happen quickly and smarter people in general i would hope things would look up. thats just my opinion.

+1 for a Chicago native. I loved the trains. They were EVERYWHERE!!! You couldnt go anywhere without seeing the tracks... or a highway on ramp. Also most of the roads were set up in a grid, which made it easier to navigate.

Also I loved Chicago for its lack of confederate flag waving, huge truck driving, improper grammer talking, narrow minded, annoying southern accent rednecks.
