There's no way roadworks can keep up with the ever-increasing # of cars on our roads. Due to the relatively low cost of living compared to other big-10 cities, most of us prefer to have more than 1 car per person. Increasing the width of I75/85/285 to even 10 lanes is only a temporary solution. The only real solution is to build a better MARTA system that reaches the areas where a vast population of Atlantans live, viz., Marietta, Sandy Springs etc. Encourage people to travel by public transport and make the train/bus combo the real lifeline of the city. I'm all for levying road tax/toll during weekday rush hour. Something along the lines of London/Manhattan (NYC) would be great. Enforce a strict "left lane is for passing only" rule. Give the left lane mofo sitters a straight 6 point ticket. That way we won't have people queuing up in all lanes. Increase the speed limit to 75mph and enforce that.
And for the love of God, stop putting up construction zones in every farking corner. Construction zones are for "construction" and not for enforcing a freakin speed zone. If you're gonna expand the road in '09, put the damn cones up in '09 and not in '07. The downtown connector is an absolute mess. I have to leave home an hour in advance for getting to the airport on Monday mornings, something that used to take 20 odd minutes until late last year.
