Default So i joined a gym today

Today i took my first big step into getting in shape, im 25, iv got really high blood pressure from being over weight, and im sick and tired of being sick and tired. The gym i started at is Bodyplex, and im really liking what iv seen so far. I will be going 5 times a week, trying to go to as many of their free classes that they have.

My question is, what type of calorie intake should i be eating if im wanting to lose a good amount of weight, like in the 60-70lbs range. Im 6,0 tall and i weight right at 250lbs. I want to be about 180lbs. Any input as to what exercise i should do most exe... would be helpful. Im also thinking about getting a personal trainer as well to help push me, because if im left to do on my own, i know my laziness will find a way out of it.

I will be posting progress photos as i go, im not really sure if i want to put my starting photo untill i have a little weight loss under my belt, but who knows, we will see.

personally I don't think posting your progress pics will impress anyone
plus, why would we care if you're losing the weight or not? take em, but keep them to yourself lol

either way, since you're only looking to lose weight i recommend you focus on your cardio. Also, ppl who feel weak, tired and lazy - pretty much unmotivated to do anything, could possibly be anemic... try taking some iron pills every other day and see if this somewhat helps you out

heh, not really trying to impress any one, but i guess i can see how you could think that. Maybe posting them isnt the greatest of ideas, but oh well. Ill look into taking some iron pills, thanks for the info

well, at your age ( same as me ) its a perfect time to get weight under control. I sure as hell dont want to have a heart attack or stroke at 30 :/ and my doctor said, if i dont lose the weight im a prime candidate for it :C

I took my blood pressure today, and it was 153/110...thats way to damn high for some one my age. Sure its a mix of being unhealthy and stress from owning a business, but I just have to do something about it. I was scared to death today when i saw how high my bp was. It was one of those, enough is enough moments in life.

I also started gym today. But I'm not in it for weight loss, but for endurance and to increase my muscle mass. I have too much free time on my hands that I don't know what to do with.

SO yeah, you're not the only one. Goodluck on achieving your goals.

It's not to impress, it will help motivate himself and others. Nothing wrong with that at all.

WOW that BP is way to high man. Having credits in medic class that BP is something to watch and take care of. Well im 6ft about 185-190 varies at times and I work out 5 days a week. I eat 3 meals a day and try not to eat much late at night. Eating late at night will get you weight added on usually from a slower metabolism at night while you sleep. Everyone wants a trim belly, and good cardio so I would suggest doing around 100 crunches a day maybe 20 at a time rest and so forth 5 days a week. After a month or so do 100 situps a day maybe 25 a set as you get stronger. Do cardio, and run/jog a mile or 2 will also be a good overall work out. It's what you want to strengthen in and develop muscle in after that. I mean you want big arms to flex to the girls work out your arms and etc... Since you want to lose alot of weight I suggest the crunches, running and cardio at first and doing a regular routine workout maybe upper body one day, lower body the next, and so forth. Concentrate on cardio for your BP

i have a bunch of friends that are finding out they have high blood pressure... it's crazy! good for you, though... just don't get out of the habit of going to the gym. it's so easy to quit and so hard to start back up all the time!

and be careful with drinking too

    good luck!

take your weight and multiply it by 10 and that is the amount of calories you should be taking in in order to lose weight at a healthy rate.

Bodyplex is definitely a nice gym to start of with. A friend of mines work there. Well u can also go and read up on articles at Bodybuilding.com They definitely have a lot of good information to read up on. If it has been awhile since u lifted any type of weights or anything like that then just start off doing simple movements on your workouts. You can try to get a session or two from the trainers to get some ideas of workouts or what to do. Oh yeah and like someone mentioned above, do some cardio! If you're a person like me and hate cardio then just start off with 15 minutes and gradually work your way up to 30 minutes or however long you want. Treadmill (a bit rough on the knees, for me at least) or the ellipticals are pretty good machines.

As far as your calorie count, well it all depends on how much you weigh, but don't start right away with hard calorie counting. Take simple steps on your diet. It's much easier going step by step then just going cold turkey and counting every single calorie you take in. Since you want to loose weight, start by trying to roughly eat around 6 meals a day. Thats about a small meal every 2-3 hours. Have at least some type of protein in each meal. Ex. Protein shake, Chicken Breast, Fish, turkey breast, etc...

Just take simple steps and gradually get more and more involved, because everything can get overwhelming if you just start everything at once. Just let yourself get in the swing of things.

And progress pics are actually a very good idea. You wont be able to see the changes day to day unless you compare pictures like before and after. The changes you see should definitely fuel your motivation.

Good luck on the journey and hope blood pressure and things get better for ya. Small steps at a time, and always remember that changes don't appear overnight.

Today was my 2nd day in the gym, and my first day doing anything with weights. my first day i went in and did pure cardio. I rode the bike for 6 miles and then went to the tredmill for a mile and a half jog, and boy my legs felt like noodles.

Its amazing how fast you feel good, like I was getting depressed and feeling like shit every day, and with just 1 day of good exercise i felt great!! Today i worked on my arms and chest. I had a friend there showing me the moves to do; i had no idea what i was doing lol. Im feeling really good about this, i know its not going to be easy, but damn i feel good right now

Haha yes how u feel definitely will change. Eventually you would just realize that you have much more energy throughout the day and not feel all sluggish. Be careful and don't over work yourself ,because you would be doing more harm than improving. Since you are new then just start of simple for now, so you can a general idea of how certain exercises should feel and muscles you should be keeping more tension etc. Goodluck and keep it up!

I'm in the same boat as you, just started off a bit bigger lol. I'm 27, and was just over 300lbs, my wife and I joined Just Fitness 4U in Marietta in June, and I'm down about 30lbs now. I'm sure you're gym offers the same type of stuff, we see a training once a week for $70 and she is well worth the money. She gives us all kinds of advice on fitness, diet, etc, and she whoops are as 30 mins every Thursday. Plus they have competitions for most weight loss and stuff like that. My advice would be do as much cardio as you can, I had really high blood pressure too and doing 10 mins on the tread mill used to have me about ready to pass out, but you just build up. Now I'm able to do an hour of run/walk without feeling like I'm going to die lol. Cardio is definitely what you need to focus on for weight loss, and some weight training, but cardio is vital. Best of luck to you.
