Hate to say it, but the most effective way to quit is to get locked up or hospitalized, cigs were easy for me to kick, its the "Bob Marley" that kicks my ass

I smoke and haven't really thought about quiting anytime soon. Depending on how many cigs you smoke you should try this... If you smoke 8 cigarettes a day, try smoking 5 or 6. Throw some away. Slowly smoke less and less. I know that sounds like a pretty dumb way but if you really want to quit, throwing some away shouldn't effect you at all.

I just quit straight up. I smoked for about three years, but then I just never bought another pack. I really can't complain.

you just need the right motivation. My fiance told me no action until I quit. It took all of .054252345 seconds to decide what I was going to do. That was over 2 years ago, and I have not had any problems since. She doesn't mind if I smoke a cigar from time to time. Looking back on it, I now see how dirty smoking is. You dont notice when you smoke, but it gives your skin, clothes, breath, hair, etc the stench of smoke. I dislike the smell so much now that if I go to a bar, the first thing I do when I get home is take a shower.

I smoked for 2 years, then got in a bad motorcycle wreck, spent 2 weeks in the hospital, walked out and said I have not smoked in 2 weeks mind as well quit....

p.s. I don't suggest running into a car to quit smoking..

thanks guys, i quit once before, but started again cause i was stressed out by work and college.
i'm not smoking as many as i used to(went from 1/2-3/4 a pack a day to about 3 or 4). my girl doesn't like it, and i find it easier not to smoke when i'm with her, but since we don't live together, yet, its not that easy. we should be getting a place together in the next few months or so, just trying to get the money situation straight first(i'm on probation and the fine is kicking my ass)
i quit last time by spending like 50bucks on nicorette gum or whatever its called.

I smoked for about 9 years and quit by using the gum. After the first week it wasn't bad at all. Once you decide to quit you can't let your self slip up. After four days I wasn't even using the gum. Its really all a mental thing but the gum gives you something to calm the cravings.

may take 21 days to get into the habit of doing things naturally, but definetly not 21 days to start the habit of smoking alone. i remember the hardest part of quitting was the actual mental part of not being able to pick a cig up and smoke it when i got in the car or got bored. whether i wanted/ or needed a cig or not it was still hard just not going through the routine

I have never and will never smoke, but I imagine the first step is get in the right state of mind. Saying " I started again cause of stress, etc " is BS. You did it. not stress not anything else. You chose to pick it back up and get addicted again. Do obese ppl get that way cause they were hungry? No. Cause they wanted a crutch, food was it. Same situation with smoking. If you truly want to stop, and are in the right place in your head. you'll do it. Period. Besides...what do you think lung cancer would do for your stress lvl?

i used the gum. i bought niccorrette at rite aid for 20 dollars or osmething, the 4mg ones, and its really helping. i havent had a cig in almost 2 weeks. this is my second time using this brand, the first time i quit for 3 months, and just caved in.

another thing to seriously look at is what else do you do while smoke? The thing for me was that I drink and I smoke. Well, in order to quit smoking, I also had to put a hold on drinking.

it takes willpower man, and if you've got that, you can quit.

I'm in the same situation man. been smoking on and off for a couple years. I really want to quit..I hate the smell, bad breath it gives me, money I spend ect..Cold turkey definitely doesn't work for some people. I'm trying to gradually quit..as in smoking a couple a day opposed to my regular 10-15. Currently, I'm satisfied with 3-5 a day so I hope I'll be able to quit soon. Good Luck

I smoked Marlboro Reds for 15 years. 1-2 packs a day. I quit cold-turkey, drunk at a bar with a fresh pack of ciggs and my best friend drunk by my side. We were wasted and were like "we quit" and threw the pack of ciggs at the bartender (she still smokes). This is after trying the "I'll quit on Monday" or "After this pack is gone" or "Only smoke when I drink" or "Only smoke after I eat" or "Only smoke at work" or "Only smoke 5 a day" or "I'll only smoke other people's cigs and won't buy any" approach many, many times. To me it's the only way because it is the only thing that worked for me. When I went to the bar, I would cut a straw the size of a cig and hold it in my hand like a smoke and when I felt the urge to puff, I'd puff the straw. LOL. I'd forget it was a straw until I puffed air. Did the same in the car. That took care of my "hand-to-mouth" issue. Then I sucked on a lot of dum dum's when I wasn't at the bar to cure the "hand-to-mouth" issue.

I didn't smoke a cig for 3 years. Now I smoke if I get real hammered or if I go to the Pink Pony and I TOTALLY regret it the next day. I go months even years without having a cig, that being said. I sometimes still get the urge, but like I said, I regret it the next day, if I act on it, because I feel like crap.

The best thing about quitting smoking is you can smell again. You never realize you can't smell until you quit and start smelling again. The worst thing is now that you can smell, you can smell a cig from a mile away and it makes you want to puke. The other bad thing is you hack up all that black **** because you body is cleaning it out.

    Good luck.

i know the feeling. i started to smoke when i was about 15, been smokin on and off since, i'm 20 now.
i quit once when i was about 18 with the gum, then i had a lot of stress on me, and starting casually drinking and i would smoke when i would drink. the drinking got WAY out of hand, so i quit drinking....but i still smoke.
everyone has their own ways of doing things, i had a couple failures and seeing what has worked for someone else and see if it could work for me.

Here is how you quit! Dont get addicted in the first place. I didnt. Plue think about all of the money wasted on cigarrettes that could be used on something else, ie car, house, prosti....
