Buying a car without title...

If the owner provides a bill of sale can i still put the vin under my name or does the previous owner need the title? (he lost the title) I will eventually just call the dmv but want to know if anyone on here knows..

nooo, im pretty sure you have to have the title to register it under your name.

PLUS, doing just a bill of sale is not such a good idea ... i did that when i traded my camaro for my civic & the kid ****ED up the camaro & tried to say I sold him a lemon & wouldnt give me the title until i threatened to take him to court & had to give him 60 dollars to fix something HE ****ed up. *******.

dont really understand the question.

If you are buying a car with no title, then you cant do anything with the car. LEGALLY it cant even be sold except for parts.

You would want to get a bill of sale, then you can apply for the title through the DMV

without the title you wont be able to get insurance on it
and unless you really know this person your not gonna know if they really ever did have the title for the car. Just best bet is to not buy the car until you have the title for it. thats the safest thing to do. And like i said you cant put insurance on it unless you have the title

The previous owner lost the title to the car...the car has a valid vin number but he doesn't know where he left the title...If i buy the car he will write me out a bill of sale...just wondering if i can still register the car with the bill of sale or will i need the title?

bonded title is never good to get. I looked into getting one for my car but found out thats a bad idea so i just waited and applied for a new title so now no matter what i own the car legally

He shows his ID, says "i lost a title to a car i owned" and the print it up.

If he never switched the title in his name, then you HAVE to get a bonded title.

yeah thats exacly what i did. sucks tho cuz Hapeville is the only place where they do it right there in front of you. but atleast you know its legit and you have no worries about it being legal

Question about bonded titles...what do i need to get one? I heard you have to go through some type of inspection or a cop has to come check the car out to make sure it isn't stolen....

and where can i get a title bond at? also anyone have that number to the title place in hapeville?

i had to get a cop to come and sign a T22B form i think it was. That was just to make sure that the VIN was correct.
The thing is what you put up there is not what you get for a bonded title. With that stuff you get a regular title in your name. DO NOT GET A BONDED TITLE.

you can still get it registered but with a title bond its kinda like your the partial owner of the car. someone can come back with the original title and you would be screwed

im not saying your wrong but i never believe people when they say how long it takes for that kind of stuff. This lady was doing the stuff so i could get the title to my car and she told me it would take 30-60 days and she was like "it never takes 60 days". fu*k that bit*h cuz it took 90 damn days.

He said his daughter had the title but would surely get it for me and bring it to me. I towed the car home (hadn't been driven in a while). A week went by and still had not heard anything from the guy so I went over to his house. He said he still hasn't received it from his daughter. He was an older guy so I didn't feel like anything was wrong. A month goes by and same story, blaming it on the daughter and tells me she can't find it. I go to the DMV to try and apply for a "bonded title". The lady at the counter tells me that the guy that sold me the vehicle does not own it. I was not thrilled. As I start to walk out, she also tells me that there is a lien on it still! WTF?? The car is 15 yrs old at the time and it someone still owes money on this? I go back to the guys house to talk to him about everything, of course, he was never home from this point on. I go to the PD to see what I could do about this situation and luckily the detective was nice and gave me the current owner's address along with the lien holders info. I tried getting in touch with the "current" owners but they apparently moved and the lien holder company went under a few years before. I took the guy to small claims court to only get it thrown out by the judge.

Needless to say, I was not thrilled but I got lucky. I traded it for a B20 motor shortly after. The car is now a "track car".

Maybe insurance is different in Atlanta from the rest of the states, but I never needed a title to get insurance. One has nothing to do with the other. I can get insurance for a car I don't even own yet, so why would you need a title for insurance? Yeah, you should get the title but it is not necessary for insurance purposes everywhere I have insured my vehicles to include 3 counties in Ga.

I called the dmv and In order to register the car through the DMV i will have to have the orginal title.If i don't the orginal owner had to apply for one and then i have to go to the dmv and get it transferred under my name. If i don't have his contact info i can do a title bond and that requires a vehicle inspection done by a cop and a bill of sale....

The lady has to call me back to make sure the car doesn't have any liens on it or anything like that. So i'll know for sure hopefully by today.

You have to go to a bonding agency and they will give you paperpwork to get a bonded title. This cost about $200. Then you bring that to the DMV to get your title. It will be a bonded title but it will secure you from the owner finding the original and then trying to reclaim your car after you bought it. The best way is to tell the owner to file for a lost title and have one reissued.(this is not hard nor time consuming if he complains) and give you that one.

If you need to get a bill of sale, just go down to the DMV and they'll print out a blank official one for you. When you're selling a car, you should have the title too but it's best if you have both a title and a bill of sale. Found that out with my Z...should you get stopped on the way home with the car or before you have gotten around to getting a tag on it, the cop will want to see the bill of sale to prove that it's actually your car. Yes, even if the title is in your name and dated for within 30 days of when you're pulled over.

That's in cobb county at least, I assume it'd be the same anywhere in GA.

the only way i have ever been able to insure a car without title is when i bought it from a dealership and thats only cuz the dealership has to get the title from the state. Other than that idk how you were able to get insurance without title cuz my insurance company would never let me. I asked and they turned me down.
