Default Time to upgrade the R1

Put the bike on the dyno today, found my rings are pretty worn. Looks like its time to plan out an engine upgrade for the R1. Thinking about possibly putting an 02-03 injected swap on it.

    Your R1 is carb'd? Didn't know that.

2002 was the first year of fuel injection for the R1s. With fuel injection, they made slightly more power topend, but a lot more in the mid and lower rpms. My old 02 is a lot stronger compared to my current setup.

Ah gotcha. I've been told in the past to stay away from carb'd bikes. Never knew why though. Guess it was from a maintenance point of view.

As far as I know, they're pretty difficult to tune (4 carbs) and synchronize them. Then having to tune for different times of year and altitudes.

Yessir. Tuning can be a real PITA on a carb'd bike. Not to mention the tendency of jets to clog, float valves to stick or not seat properly, etc.

Re-ring and stroke it? (over bore, new cams take ur pick)? Should be cheaper than an engine swap I think..

But yea what you got done to it so far?

And the only thing I DO like about carbs is that I can "tune" it with only a screw driver!

I may rebuild this one, since I know the motor has no major issues, but I will put another motor in while I do it, so that the bike isn't down too long.

This bike has a lot done to it, so I will keep it for a long, long time.

This one is down to 139 at the wheel right now, as it lost a few hp since it started with the rings.

My 02 was putting 147 down, but had a lot more in the low and mid range compared to the 2000.

Those are pretty impressive numbers a pre-04.

Both of them have a LOT of money in them. My 02 had every intake and exhaust mod you could through at it.
The 2000 is the same, but the carbs don't have as much low end as FI.
With the CF rims, and CF bodywork, the 2000 is pretty light. I can still pull a lot of newer liter bikes. I don't like to ride this one too hard anymore though, as it is getting harder to repair old bikes. Probably need to grab up another newer bike soon, and let the 929RR go.

We just parted ways with our shop R1 for that very reason. It was a 99 with 44k on the chassis, 01 motor with around 5,500 on it. Fun bike, but little things starting to wear over time on the chassis, and just general stress of being a 40+k bike that was rode like it was. The guy that bought it is extremely pleased with it though. I liked the feel of that bike for sure, I'd love to ride one with more mods. That one was just a full Yoshi, K&N, carbs synced and tuned, -1/+2, 120/190 Conti Sport Attacks, ProTek clip ons, Hotbodies undertail and hugger, Sprint steering dampner setup with custom mount, and everything safety wired.

Mine has more in the suspension department - all Ohlins, AP brakes, and BST wheels. Makes it handle very quick.

That's where I'd like to spend more money on mine, heck a stock 1k has more power than I'll ever use. Right now I have Superbike Italia worked forks, and a Penske worked rear shock, both serviced this winter by Superbike Italia and setup for my weight/riding style which work good enough for me, but I'd like an aftermarket stabilizer, better brakes, and wheels. I'm rocking the 10w fork oil in the stock dampner for now and it works pretty good, so brakes and wheels are my next investments, then I'll go GPR dampner.

A GPR stabilizer is also on my list unless ohlins (sp?) makes one for my bike.

you dont have to rejet for temperature/altitude ona stock street bike with SV (constant velocity carbs)

that would only go for flat slides style carbs or the likes

You could, but there is no reason to. You want the bike to be in its optimal operating temperature range.

Damn. Gotta fix this coolant issue before Zach can tune it. Don't have a clue where to start.
