My first HDR attempt, I know it isn't good. But any helpful criticism would be nice. I know as a general rule you are supposed to take pictures at -2EV, 0, and +2EV, where do you read these values on the camera? When I did this, I focused on the city skyline in the distance and took a shot (0), then I went up 2 clicks on the shutter speed, then down 2 clicks on the shutter speed to get my 3 images. But that ended up only being -.34EV and +.34EV.

Imbosile- I really like this shot but the flare is killing me. Maybe try a slightly different angle so that the flare if there is one would be easier to fix instead of being in the middle of the tree. The flare on the right side of your picture is minimal and should be easy to fix. I would also clean up the lines from the fisheye lens on the bottom right corner so that it looks more like the rest of the corners. I think you did a good job with a subtle HDR because most people overdo them.

Since I came to this thread to post a picture, here it is

Thanks for the feedback. As for the flare, I honestly expected it to be worse haha. I was using a $42.00 adapter that goes on the end of your lens. I want to go back to the same spot and give it another try, this time taking a broader range of photos than before. Thanks!

The only reason you only come out with 2 shots is because you didnt hit your perfect exposure shot. I normally do 5exp HDR pics which is -2ev, -1ev, perfect exp, +1ev, +2ev.
does the D50 not have AEB on the camera? If so it should only have upto a 3 shot Bracketing just like the D70s, the D300 has up to a 9 shot Bracketing which is unreal.

If you are in a spot which has a lot of shadows and dark spots, you will need 5-7exp in you bracketing. You can choose if you want a .5ev or 1ev, or 2ev, betweent each exposure. Normally 1ev is good. With your picture of the city, 3exp was fine, -1ev, perfect exp, and +1ev.... also try a 5 shot as well. Make sure you use the tripod always, low ISO and 20+ on your f/. If I was you, I wouldnt use that wide angle/fisheye lens, or at least crop out the rounded black edges.....

Edit.... I just noticed you did say you took the three shots and you hit (0) first.... Just start out on your (-) exp first then go up from there. Which means your shots go from Darker to lighter

Okay so I was just messing around with bracketing (I've never used it before), looks like I can only do a 3 shot bracket. My bracketing options are 1/2 or 1/3 step. I have it set on 1/2 step currently. I also have it set to do a 2.0 Step Auto Exposure & Flash bracket.

Now I took 3 pictures, it automatically did the one at the correct exposure, then it did one at -1.74 and + 2.13, why would it not take the pictures at even increments?

Also, I got to a "menu" on the information display on the top of the camera where I can cycle through -5.0, -4.5, -4.0, etc, etc, 0, etc, etc, +4.0, +4.5, +5.0. My was set on +2.5, but I can only get to this menu when I am in Aperture Mode, can someone tell me what this is? And what should it be set on?

Just manually do it...you can tell what's under or over-exposed and manually shoot to compensate.

Yeah that sounds like the best option, that will allow me to shoot more than 3 shots if I want to.

Yeah I had to manually do it on the D70 If I wanted to shoot more then 3 shots.

The menu you were talking about sounds like your correct/perfect exposure menu... That should be set right at (0), If it is set at +2.5 and you go take a picture in mid day and you have it set on (0) in the view finder, it actually takes the picture and it comes out 2.5 stops higher.... try setting that on (0) and see how it turns out.

If you are wanting to continue using HDR, you need to purchase Photomatix software. Its an HDR software and its better then CS3's HDR setup.
They have a trial version, but it watermarks they're name in three different places on the photo, but it will give you an idea on how it works. When you go to start the program up it will pull up a menu and it ask you about a quick tutorial, click on that and it will help you out tremendosley(spl) on the steps to take in that software... it will take about 5-10minutes

This pic was actually the correct exposure shot of 3 bracketing pics...
It was a little dark and the shadows were killing it using 3 shots(should of been 5-7 shots) so I figured I would just use a normal exp.

Hmm, so I wonder if the entire 2 years I've had this camera if my pictures have been coming out 2.5 stops higher than they should. That would really suck. Thanks for pointing that out though. Yeah right now I am just using CS2's HDR setup, I redid my previous one and I am working on a few things right now. I'll post it up soon and you guys can tell me if you think it's a little better. Thanks so much for the help.

Well I downloaded the trial and have been messing around with it. Here's a little something I did.

    Before: original, "correctly" exposed

    After: HDR

I tried cleaning up the flare in the tree, and I took out the rounded edges from the lens. I thought it looks good in sepia, but thats just me. There was not much difference in your exposures either. Just remember that your darker exposure fixes all the overexposed, and lighter exposure fixes the underexposed. The reason for HDR is, when your out shooting and you see an amazing landscape but if you go to take a few shots of it with a correct exposure your skies might be to bright and white, or your shadowed places will be black. They say HDR pretty much is what you see in person with your naked eye and how the eye can focus and adjust to everything. A lot of people get to crazy with it most of the time, but there are some out there that are just amazing.
