2. I said nothing about "powerful" brakes, I said equal or better. I got this from a couple road tests that had 60-0 and 80-0 braking tests for the cars. Both the STI/EVO and the 911 turbo have very comparable braking hardware, including EBD, and the EVO/STI weigh less and should therefore have less overall braking requirements.
I got my information from this list, which I downloaded:
**note the relative positions of the cars I spoke about
BMW M3 GTR Schnitzer (11/2002) 7:12.25
Radical SR3 Turbo ( 7/2003) 7.19 (7:26 road tyres link???)
Porsche Carrera GT ( 9/2004) 7:32.44 (22.835km circuit)
TechArt-Porsche GT street ( 8/2001) 7:43
Pagani Zonda S ( 7/2002) 7:44
Porsche 911 GT2 ( 6/2001) 7:46
Porsche 911 GT3 RS ( 3/2004) 7:47
Porsche 911 GT3 Cup ( 2/1999) 7:49
Lamborghini Murciélago ( 6/2002) 7:50
BMW M3 CSL ( 8/2003) 7:50
Mercedes SLR McLaren ( 6/2004) 7:52
Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 (???) 7:52
Lamborghini Gallardo (12/2003) 7:52
Porsche 911 GT3 ( 6/2003) 7:54
Ferrari Challenge Stradale ( 2/2004) 7:56
Porsche 911 Turbo ( 6/2000) 7:56
Lotec-Porsche 911 Turbo ( 5/1998) 7:57
Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 (???) 7:59
That skyline time is "unofficial" because they removed the top-speed governor from it for the test. But, since the 911 turbo isnt limited, this really just shows what the cars are capable of.
Also, if you look at this excerpt of the race track results from the "Top Gear" TV show time-attacks, they show the STI and the EVO both ahead of the 911 turbo. If you have seen the TV show, the track is pretty techincal and relies on handling/braking more than pure power. Once again, ill bold the cars Im talking about:
Mitsubishi Evo VIII - 1.28.9
BMW Alpine Z8 - 1.29.0
Mercedes CL65 - 1.29
Alfa 3.7 GTA - 1.30.0
Subaru Impreza STI - 1.30.1
Vauxhall Monaro VXR - 1.30.1
Aston Martin DB7 GT - 1.30.4
Golf R32 - 1.30.4 -NEW
Audi S4 - 1.30.9
Porsche 911 turbo - 1.31.0
Vauxhall VX 220 turbo - 1.31.3
This is going tangental anyway. My point is that "exotics" dont necessarily hold any performance edges over well built tuner (or even "less exotic" factory) cars.
It's not difficult to get a lot of power out of a Porsche, though. Just a simple turbo swap, ECU reprogram, intake, exhaust, and fuel pressure regulator will get you over 600+hp.Originally Posted by cherry kool aid

why dont we throw up the 2007 911 turbo for good measure
Quote Speedtv.com
"Around Germany’s Nürburgring track in the dry, the car’s lap time is 7min 49sec on standard tires (8min flat for the outgoing model) and 7min 42sec on the sports tires."
Also, on the top gear board, look what's right above the evo.
Porsche 911 Carrera S - 1.28.9 (very wet)

it doesnt matter realy, because we all know i hold the record at the track with my miata LOL.

A. I dont recall it saying the skyline was modified, other than in the article it mentioned the skylines had the governor removed. I will say that I dont know, so I can argue that point. Im also not a huge skyline fan, so its not a huge deal to me anyway. If I could find that website again, I would gladly post the link. Thats not the first time Ive seen a list with that fast skyline in it either. In any case, that track is much more high-speed, so I expect a more powerful car to do relatively better. Its not "twisties."
B. I dont know if youre talking about the Nurburing or the Top Gear test. If its the Nurburing one, I would expect rain to have caused more of a difference than .5 sec on that big of a track. If you are talking about Top Gear, .5 sec still wouldnt have made-up the difference between the 996 and the STI even. I also didnt see any ***'s next to it, but here is the link from Top Gear's website, if you would like to try to find some ***'s.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps/index.shtml
I do see that they say the 911 carrera S test was with a very wet track, but they didnt mention it for the turbo. As a matter of fact, a lot of their tests in the shows are done in wet...it seems like it rains most of the time there. There is no reason to think the other cars didnt have the same issue.
I would consider their test track to be more indicative of "twisties" than a lot of other tracks though.
As for being inaccurate lists, I posted them as I found them. I dont see anything that inaccurate except for the other Ring list didnt show that particular skyline's times in it. Other cars that are shown on both lists show the same times.
And back to my only original point..."exotics" arent necessarily faster in the twisites, or anywhere else, than a well tuned non-exotic. I didnt even have a desire to harp on the 911 turbo specifically in this, since I dont consider it an exotic anyway. It was just a segway into the point.
A. At 320hp (advertised), a 3400lbs Skyline GT R34 is not going to outrun a 996TT (420hp European spec). My car will do 192mph stock, on the top end. The Skyline (stock) won't even come close. The coeffecient of drag will kill that nonsense. Also, the brakes on a 996TT are better and hold up better than that of an R34. That is a huge issue as well. Trust me, it wasn't stock. There was some work done to it beyond the governer.Originally Posted by lightspeed
B. Yes, I was talking about the top gear track. In dry weather, they (Jeremy Clarkson) said that it would be in the 1:26-1:27 area. That's 1 minute, 26 seconds. Yes, 0.5 s would have made a rather large difference. Like I said, I have the video of this test at home. I will gladly host it for you later if you would like. They put a * on the board where they mark the time down after the Stig drove it. The 996TT is faster than the new Carrera S (rated at 355hp). The track was also a LOT more wet than when the Carrera S ran as well. I have seen all the videos, you will just have to trust me on this one.

and yes my silly comment, i don't know how many 600whp+ sti you've taken up in the mountains lately but i know for a fact cars w/ 1/3 of that power can out handle and pull better times...
how about this you bring your 600whp sti out and brandon will bring his porsche and we'll find out?![]()
i've rode in dan's car a couple of times and it is very fast, a little to laggy for me, but hey thats just my opinion. I may be about to get flamed, but I think a porsche is in a completely different league than the STi, this coming from a STi owner. If you doubt me, look at the porsche's hertiage, compared to subaru's. No matter how many aftermarket parts we add to our cars, the porsche will still be a better designed car, period.

^^^ so you were wrong if track was dry it would go 1.27.5 like the porsche 911 GT3
the skyline gtr was not neccessarily modded, but it was the ztune edition. they took 25 skyline r34s and pretty much made them the jtc500 cars. but its common sense that a sti will never be a porsche.

Well, it was not a "stock" R34 as I said. It was the R34 Z-tune edition; hardly a stock R34 in the sense of what was listed.Originally Posted by cherry kool aid

anyways i know all of the others except the boxter are on a whole 'nother level... but why the hell would porsche make the 944! lol
The value for 'em is under like 5k now ... which should tell you something... They are crazy unreliable, and pull like shit. A NA supra(mk3) will give it a run for the money.

Randomguy: Try running in a tuned/modded 944 Turbo S.That will quickly change your opinion on things, I promise.

are you sure thats the one they ran at nuburgring? That article looks pretty new. I remember seeing this list including a GTR for quite some time now. I agree it would justify the additional performance over the other ones in the list.Originally Posted by cherry kool aid
I wasnt at all trying to make any specific comparisons, Im just using examples. I know what the STI limitations are, and no its not as well designed as a Porsche. That wasnt the point here. But with the right parts, it (and many other cars) can be made to perform as well as a Porsche or an exotic, for much less money overall.Originally Posted by rolling_trip

Correction, why the hell did Porsche make the 924 (the cheapest of the poor man's porsche)? The 944 turbo (951) is only a 4 cylinder with just under 217hp (the '88 Turbo S had 250hp though) and unless the Honda was a SOHC turbo then it's gonna have quite a bit more than 220hp with minimal tuning...I've seen that 2.5 liter in the porsche built out the ass though. The best is a twin turbo LS1 in a 994 shellOriginally Posted by RaИdomGuy

anyways porsche should stick with good shit and not release any more 'boxters' and cheyennes lol... it degrades the company. Maybe do a ferrari-maserati type of thing...but they're ruining the label.
#1. Boxer engine + Roadster = BoxsterOriginally Posted by RaИdomGuy
#2. Porsche is 100% independent. Ferrari is not. They are owned by Fiat. They only make cars to suppliment their racing. They also have a parent company. Porsche does not. Porsche HAS to broaden its product line in order to sell cars. The Boxster and Cayenne SAVED Porsche from going under. I am not sure if you were aware of that or not...

i personally like the Cayenne. at least the Cayenne S, its a refreshing take on the dull world of SUVs. and as for the boxter, well i cant hate it too much because the hardtop, something known as a Cayman, KICKS ASS.

The Cayenne Turbo (450hp) or Cayenne Turbo S (520hp) are the only ones to get. The Cayenne and Cayenne S are N/A and thus, "eh" in comparison.Originally Posted by cherry kool aid
