Brett. I'll have to call you on this one. Actually the main bird and the others switch positions during flight. The main bird creates a draft for the other birds to basically "coast" in. That way the other birds don't have to keep so hard on flying. When the main bird tires, he falls back in formation and another bird takes the lead. The reason geese and other birds fly in V's..

Similar to drafting.. As the birds fly, it literaly breaks the wind making it easier for the other birds to fly behind. THe older geese fly towards the rear of the group, so that they have it easiest.

Also, they rotate on the lead, so the young birds can rest and take turns leading the group..

Not really. Wing tip vorticies create an upwash, that gives the bird behind it extra lift, which means it can fly at a lower angle of attack and reduce it's drag. Birds rotate the front because they have to work the hardest and get tired.
