Any Firefighters in here?

So in four weeks I'm going to finish college with a bachelor's in Media arts and animation.

I want to do freelance work and possibly have another job. I've been thinking of doing the firefighter bit. I love the art stuff and I know it will suit me well, but I want to do something that makes an impact on society.

So how what should I train for. What type of things do I need to know? What should I expect when I test for this?

I've heard that up to 5 years of my military can transfer into my retirement as a FF. Is this true?

I used to be a volunteer firefighter. Its not that hard but you need to be dedicated. Hell if i can get through it you can. it is a very rewarding thing to do.

Depand on the dept ur work for.What we do only have a lil impact on society.Be prepared to like EMS because most fire dept nowdays run EMS calls.

I can't really explain how you shld train.I do one on one training at the gym with a bunch of guys.Most of them quit 2nd day.It's easier to show you insted of writing it in here. Just do the basic.A lot of cardio and strength training.

TO pass the entrance test, u need to know ur basic math,science and english.You have to to have a clean records!Period.If u screw up, just give up now. It's good if u go through emt sch before u submit ur application.

I have no clue abt that.

I'm not worried about any of the test except the psychological test. I had a slight case of PTSD when I came back from Iraq. It wasn't because of anything I saw (violence), but a bit of paranoia from being attacked almost every day.
It only lasted for a few months until I got out of the Army. I saw a psychologist and he released me from any further aid.


I'm a very physical person. My body mass isn't that great (5'9" 165 lbs) so carrying a heavy load isn't something I'm use to. But if there is something I cannot do I will train and discipline myself until I can.

my hubby was looking to get in to firefighting. he went through the acamedy in florida then moved up here and had to start all over. he succeeded in all of the testing but when it came down to getting hired they wanted people with experience. so, start volunteering at a local station. then you will probably have to take some schooling depending on the county. I used to be a firefighter and I loved almost every minute of it. There were some pains in it, but that can be said for any job. It can be very rewarding, but it can also be very difficult. Be prepared to do alot of heavy lifting, working in dangerous situations, and having a crazy schedule. The best way to prepare is to start working out both cardio and muscular. You need to have good endurance or working in the heat of a fire will kick your ass fast. Look more into it and get as many viewpoints on it as you can. I think you would love it if you are that interested in making a slight impact on society. Follow your heart and do what makes you happy. Best of luck to you man.

How abt this for a start.Get u a sauna suit and run with it.It might be easier since it's the fall and weather is like below 60.Try doing it that in the upper 90s, and it's the same feeling as u are wearing bunker coat except it's lighter.Once ur body adapted to it,get u a weight vest and do cross train. Firefighting is all abt that.Wearing a total of 60+lbs gear(depending on where u work) and do cross train.

Gd luck with ur career ahead of u.Firefighting is rewarding and fun.

I was wondering what happen to him.Cobb county is a lil harder to get in.

To be honest, there isn't much that you need to know coming to the job because of the fact that most FD train in house. I don't know about transfering Military to Retirement, but it depends on the county you apply too.

Most counties will train you to be FFI/FFII and EMT-I training as well.

Personally, I'm FFI/FFII/FAO/EMT-I/Haz-Mat Tech, all within the county.
