    Default Bigdare23 new motor

I just wanted to share my new motor with IA. I had this motor installed for about 4-5months now. I'm just now sharing this with IA because I wanted to make sure I was long gone (moved) before I put specs of my motor out (Theft rate in Atlanta is increasing like everyday LOL). Anyways...

    The original motor was

    -OBD0 B16
    -LSD Y1
    -PW0 ECU
-Skunk2 intake manifold (1st gen) (no coolant lines running to the manifold)
    -Hondata intake manifold gasket
    -CTR intake cam
    -B16 exhaust cam
-Greddy 4-2-1 header (for 99 Si)
-AEM fuel rail (I'm a ricer so I wanted a red fuel rail LOL)
    -AEM CAI (2in)
    -Skunk2 catback
    -Test pipe
    -unorthodox race crank pulley
With this setup, I put down 156hp/11?tq (Mainstream can verify)

Next, I changed some stuff with this setup
    -installed CTR exhaust cam
-swapped out the Skunk2 catback with a Buddyclub spec II
-installed Toda cam gears (kept them at 0,0)
-swapped out the AEM CAI (2in) with an AEM EF hybrid CAI (2.5in)
-added an Bpi Velocity Stack to my CAI
-Converted to OBD1 and used a chipped p28 with a GSR map

    The results were the following:

176hp/117tq (Dyno at Topspeed, JDMJAYDC2 and Bus Driver J can vouch).

That setup was pretty fun. The problem was it was PEAKY. At 5.5k I made 100hp and peaked at 176hp at 8.2k (76hp gain in in 2700rpms LOL), so every time I shifted it fell flat on it face. With this motor and it being in a 2080lb chassis (CRX), I made easily work of most other b16s, I shocked a few 1.8L, but I could not hang with the 2.0+ crew. So it was time for an upgrade. (Cont'd next post)

I considered an h22, but I didn't want to sacrifice oil pan or hood clearance. Then I caught a great deal on a "knocking" b20 on IA for $100 (after taking it apart, it appeared perfected). So that begin my b20vtec "budget" build.

    bye bye ls head

    hello 84x89mm

Since this was a budget build I decided not to go forged everything. I used stock rods (with ARP hardware) and decide to bump the compression slightly with RS machine pistons. The purpose of this build is to make TORQUE since my b16 lacked it. So I slightly overbored the blocked over to 84.5mm

Since reliable was my goal, I wanted to help support the block more. So I added a properly installed (pressure in then machined) KMS block guard (please take the block guard debate some where else), properly installed KMS girdle (got the mains aligned honed), and ARP main studs for a GSR.

You can see some of the crap here

    The results were the following:

(Before I get asked who did my machine work, it was done by Larry Smith Automotive Machine Shop in Rome. Also a member on IA that works for a respectable performance shop in Atlanta assembled it for me. I'll leave his screenname out to prevent from getting his inbox flooded LOL)

Since this was a "budget" build, I decided headwork was out of the question (even though I would of loved a RLZ head on it). So after looking on IA for weeks, I found a killer deal on a b16 head (minus cams and dizzy) for $125, so I picked it up . Since I couldn't afford headwork, I decided to help the head out sightly by adding Underground Racing (old school) flat face valves, and KMS dual valve springs and titanium retainers.

    Assembled

To put the head on the block, I used a Full-Race LS-VTEC kit, and a 84.5mm .30 Cometic LS/VTEC head gasket.

The results were an old, throwback looking, that's just a raggly obd0 b16 looking, semi build b20vtec

I didn't say anything about cams yet.

So being knowledgeable to the game and yet being a noob at the same time. I screwed up big time when it came to cams. I order a set of Underground Racing cams and they ended up having this large ass lift (12.?mm) and long as duration (3??). With cams that large you need to check clearances and can't just "dropped them in". Then with duration that long, and stiff valve springs, you need at least an OEM timing belt (or better). So with that being said, the motor was installing. The car cranked up with no problem, but idle bad as hell (sounded like a v8). I decided to take it home, and then take it to Scotty in the morning. To bad the car didn't make it there. Actually 8miles later, the timing belt did a banana peel (thank you timing belt from a gasket kit ) and I was left broke down on 400. The results were BENDING EVERY DAMN VALVE IN THE HEAD (atleast during those 8 miles, the car ran like a champ whiled I babied it ).

So luckily, I didn't use many parts off of my old b16. So my homie, took the head off of the b16, swapped my valve train over (minus the cams), and installed my ctr cams. BAM I was back in the game with slightly lower compression, and a least aggressive set of cams. After a visit with Scotty, the results where the following:

206hp/156tq maxing out stock injectors and bumping the fuel pressure up

    future mods

-2.5in exhaust (Went with an ebay exhaust since most EF exhaust are 2.25in and the "performance" exhaust are over $500. Also, where I'm at I couldn't find a decent muffler that mandrel bend)
-new header (Went with a JDM DC 4-1. Race header+EF Chassis+Daily Driven=Fail, so I decided not to throw money down the drain with a $400replica or $800 real header)
-cams (I trying to catch a deal on a stage 2 set of cams. Looking at Buddyclub specIV, S2S2, or Blox Bs)
-injectors (I got DSM bluetop 450cc so I won't have to delete my resistor box)
-install new fuel pump (Got a walbro 255lph high pressure pump that needs to install)
-new tune (After getting everything I want installed, my goal is to get tuned my RLZ. I'm currently tuned on Chrome, but I plan to make the switch to e-c-tune since I heard good things about it)

I look at it like this. I'm loosing power by installing an exhaust, and not using a "race" header. But I should gain power, by installing a header without dented runners, much better cams, being able to adjust fuel properly. Hopefully I'll see 220whp/160tq by the time I'm done with it, if not, so be it. It's still fun as hell in a 2000lb car!

Now if you want to basically give away that smsp header in your sig, I'll take it That's basically the only header that works in EF/CRX chassis without hitting everything in the road.

205 with that setup is very good numbers header or not. Even with itr/ctr cams that's very good. I've seen way more built motors make far less.
