Default Probably equivalent? LS-Vtec vs. LS with worked head

I'm just going to take a guess and say that these two options will probably yield me about the same amount of power gain, and all that goes along with it, but with a different "stature"...

On a b18b1, i'm talking about either going LS-Vtec with a b16 head, and just running basic lsvtec probably with the head milled down a bit and running on an Apex'i controller

    or

I was thinking about taking a non-vtec head and putting dual valve springs in it, getting the valve job done, a mild port, and milling the head down some, also getting a re-tune with the Apex'i Vtec controller..

Either way, im looking for ~200whp. Both of these routes should get me what im looking for right?

ls-v is prob gonna be cheaper..... but nether of those is going to get you where you want with out opening up the block and giving it a significant bump in compression.

Good cams, b16 pistons and some headwork on the ls-v might get you near 200whp

a professional tuner is going to be a must

Hmm, well just another question... What is the average "yield" of horsepower from the usual non-tuned LS-Vtec? Is it around the 170 - 180whp area?

Alot of people say that stock ls bottom end with b16 head makes about 160 all day.But for a Ls with head work and other stuff it will be hard to see 190whp its harder making Hp out of NoN Vtec head.

I'd say with a stock LS bottom end + B16 head you'll be lucky to make 160; on top of that your RPMs will be wek sos. And it's not easy to make 200 WHP on an LS/VTEC either: minimum is a good header + cams + higher compression.

there's no way you can pull 200whp from either setup without going internally. The LS is definetly not going to break 160+ without alot of money on top. Stock block with a vtec head will yeild you around 140-150 whp.

    ^^yup.
higher comp, cams, rods w/ arp rod bolts for a little more revs, good header, cai, larger injectors, and chipped/tuned ecu (do not use an apexi controller).

There is a guy on you tube claiming and dyno shown making 173 with BC Valvetrain, I/H/E/IM with a stock bottom end. I think it has to do with the tuner and how you set it up.

why not a gsr head? they have smaller combustion chambers yeilding more compression already then b16 pistons. a gsr head has a quench style head and b16 and type r dont. this meant it had a closed deck wedge shaped combustion chamber instead of open and when it compresses the air fuel it moves the mixture to the center and spark plug to ignite thus also controls detonation better. it has been said many times over by honda, if they could go back the gsr head would be the type r head with a different manifold option.also it will be aroud 150-170 at the wheels. hondas rating is flywheel hp..

Let me know how that VAFC works on your LS motor lol

No, the LS head is not going to be anywhere near good enough to make 200whp. You will have to have a professional $1000-1500 port job on it to make it anywhere near what a VTEC head is capable of.

Another thing is that VTEC isnt just about head flow, its about Camshaft. The NONVTEC cams only have 1 love, which means you have to sacrifice a really shitty idle and part throttle driving for top end power. with VTEC its perfectly normal to idle like stock and make power to 8500 rpms.

SO in short, no, dont do the LS head, you wont make 200whp or close to it.

A stock B16 head can flow up to 190-200whp no problem. Do an LSVTEC with PR3 Pistons, PRO1s, AEBS Intake manifold and one of my headers. thats your best bet

I agree with what the experienced guys have stated. Joel, just go LS-V and add some goodies.

Upgrading a LS head is about like gold plating a steaming mound. At the end of the day, you will have spent a lot of money, but you still just have a piece of shit.
