i'll bite on this one, for me JDM parts is buying parts you can not get here or are more so readily available. ie, mugen, spoon, (not so much nismo anymore, cause its avail at any nissan dealership) HKS, ORC, ARC, RAYS, ATTAIN, DESMOND, CRUISE, KANSAI, CUSCO, BRIDE, RECARO, OEM JDM PARTS etc etc.

the following companys are NOT jdm i don't care what you say:
ROTA FOR GOD SAKE! ITS NOT ANYMORE JDM THAN APC, JUST ACCEPT IT!
anything that has the word "style" in it, if its a apexi N1 style, then guess what its NOT jdm

having jdm things that are true and real then they deserve the respect. having a JDM look is attainable but that doesn't make you jdm, jdm was founded on the motto, "form over function". anyone can "blackout" their head lights, slap an amber corner marker, take the reflector out of their tail lights, rock some spoon SW388 wanna bes and put a wakaba sticker in their window, yeah they are about as JDM as my big mac with soy sauce.

DON"T IMMITATE, RE-CREATE! true jdm deserves respect, it costs money, too expensive for you? deal with it.

Agreed, for the most part. But i would still call Rotas(even though they technically aren't) JDM just besause they are replicas of rare JDM wheels.

sometimes its okay to throw the term "JDM" around because even if the only part u have on ur car is sidemarkers, u could still call them JDM.

But nowadays, people will call any import mods JDM. Hell, look on ebay, you can find apc gas pedals and no name racing seats labeled as JDM.

I believe that we, as true JDM enthusiasts, should try to preserve the true JDM style and inform or correct those who misuse the term.

You're preaching to the wrong crowd bro.....As long as knock offs exist, there will be posers that will buy the shit trying to emulate the "JDM" style.....All those fake parts make the authentic ones that much better...

Just to play devil's advocate: What's the bigger "crime"....Buying fake parts and actually making use of your car or buying "JDM" parts for your car and not using them for the intended purpose?

the term "Japanese Domestic Market" or JDM is strictly used to refer to cars intended solely for sale in Japan. To be considered JDM, a car model (or a particular type or set-up within a model family) cannot be sold in any other market officially. Other markets acquire JDM vehicles through Japanese Used Vehicle Exporters selling grey import vehicles to importers. If a car or parts are sold in another market, such as the United States Domestic Market, it is not considered pure JDM but instead JDM inspired, even if manufactured under a Japanese brand.Japanese domestic market components are also preferred over Japanese aftermarket (Japanese aftermarket refers to products produced by Japanese companies, however, are not sold strictly within the Japanese domestic market.) An example of one such market is the import of Japanese engines to North America to be put into Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi cars for higher performance.

Though the majority of the JDM cars/parts imported to the United States have a US counterpart, the Japanese version may have certain advantages. Often Japanese engines have received factory tuning that allows for a higher horsepower output, due to decreased emissions standards in Japan. Cars, though of the same model, may have a different version in Japan than in the United States. Often these cars will have more performance oriented items, including but not limited to seats with more secure bolsters, increased lighting capabilities, different engines, increased suspension capabilities, along with several others.

Im not taking up for those who are on the bandwagon for rockin the wakaba stickers but in fact they are real and personally 2 different older people i know has visted japan and knew what my badges were! but i haven't had them on my car for sometime b/c my car is not up to my jdm par as of right now lol.

I hate the whole "jdm style" sh!t. I believe in function/form and i also strive for a japanese spec civic. I personally like japanese oem parts as well as japanese aftermarket parts. I would buy non japanese performance parts but i would NEVER buy jdm "style parts" To me thats just people jumping on the bandwagon.
EDIT: Damn this tread is old, i thought i posted on it before... i did

Who really cares what JDM is? The majority of JDM performance parts can be sourced domestically for a fraction of the cost. Why pay $1100 for a Trust/Greddy exhaust when you can get Joe Schmoes muffler shop to make you the exact same 3" mandrel bent exhaust and YOUR choice of a muffler and tip. Same goes for fancy HKS turbos when you can get a solid Garrett custom made here in the USA, or Blitz ICs when you can get Spearco here. I could go on forever, why spend $5K on a Tomei stroker kit when you can piece together one with Eagle rods, Mahle pistons, etc for the same or cheaper and not have to wait 5 weeks for your crate to make it across the pacific.

I'm all for JDM if its a JDM motor that is much better than the USDM equivalent. Buy parts for your car because you like them, not because you're trying to fit some JDM image. I guess if you like paying too much for a name brand then go ahead and get your JDM Bride seats instead of Corbeaus or Cobras. But seriously, JDM folding mirrors, who really gives a damn? JDM coin holder in the dash, again WTF? JDM windows, ooh thats hot ****.
