Default Why with today's job market?

As some of you know, I manage a Sprint Store.

About once a week or so, I have someone come in looking for a job. That's understandable, I'm not hiring, but I don't mind keeping resumes on file. Here recently though, I have seen an increase in people coming in dressed in:

    Sweat pants
    Ripped Jeans
    T-shirts
    Un Shaven
    Bracelets
    Tennis Shoes
    Flip Flops

and even worse, reeking of cigarette smoke.

Now, I have nothing against smokers. But at some point, did no one ever tell you not to smell like smoke.

I just had a guy walk out of here in his torn designer jeans, nike shox and a short sleeve t-shirt with a hoodie, smelling like a 3 day old ashtray after asking for a job. I almost choked on the stench of the smoke, and I was just astounded at the courage.

Can anyone explain this to me, why if you really needed a job, why you wouldn't dress professionally and maybe not smoke a cigarette right before you walked in to ask for a job.

Does anyone think this is acceptable. Would you hire anyone who did this?
I'm just that guy that spends all his time printing.... T-shirts, banners, vinyl, etc.

WOW, that is some BS. When i go looking for a job, i wear upper attire clothes, clean shaven, smell clean, smile on my face w/ a resume in hand. To answer your question no i wouldnt hire anyone that would do what you stated above.

People come in like that because they dont think those rules apply. And they believe that you owe them something. haha

I had a lady come in my car lot the other day asking me If I had any cars for $100 a month. I politely said "Ma'am my cell phone bill is $150 a month, so no we dont have a car that cheap. No dealership would"

People these days always thinking people owe them something...damn

I went into autozone looking for a job and i was wearing a dress shirt, dress pants, and a tie to go along with a fresh haircut and shave. I was only going in asking for an application too.

Exactly the way it should be done. I know people who go into a place wearing torn jeans and tshirts and wonder why they dont get called about the job

I used to sell cars. Its not that we owe them, people just want something for nothing. It's human nature. I worked for numerous different dealers and it doesn;t matter whether or not I worked for dodge or lincoln or BMW, people wanted 100 a month payments.

You would be surprised at the amount of people that just DO NOT KNOW.

From young to old, there has been a severe disconnect in job etiquette.

Of course you do have the lazy stupid people that just do not care.

It is not acceptable at all, but I would point them in the right direction if they are willing to listen.

Its starting to get to the point that people covered in tattoos, people who think not shaving is cool, and people who have hoola hoop gauges in their ears are just gonna be fucked. Its getting desperate, not employer is going to want someone looking like that working for them. Period

I was always taught to dress appropriately. I went and applied at a land survey company and wore a suit. the owner joked about how I needed to dress down for the job, but that he appreciated the fact that I was willing to dress up to come meet him.

I've had interviews with friends of the family and never wore less than a button down and slacks.

And I NEVER smoke before an interview. Once my cologne or aftershave goes on, I do not do anything else until after the interview.

Employers are beefing up the requirements outside of your experience. They want the most dedicated worker they can find, so your personality and image is going to weigh as much as your brains.

People need to get it together or find themselves jobless AFTER the economy picks up.

i was joked on too even when i came in for my interview and started working where i am now. i came to work with tie, nice dress shirt and slacks, and didnt stop wearing ties until i was told it wasnt company policy to HAVE on a tie. if i didnt, i would probably still be wearing ties and wearing suits and the such to work.

I'm covered in tattoos, but my boss didn't even know. He was extremely suprised to find out that my right arm is almost completely sleeved.

Its not the tattoos. It's presentation. I wear long sleeves because I think it looks nicer. I could get a job as a mechanic or whatever doing manual work and not give a shit about my tattoos. But I knew before i got them that I was planning on working in a field where I would wear long sleeves.

I dressed for interviews like I was posing for the cover of GQ

My office now is very casual, but we are relocating next week, merging 2 offices. Since my VP will see me everyday, I am breaking out the ties and dress shirts all day long. Oh, and I get to see all the cute females FINALLY!

Dress to impress people cause you NEVER know who may be watching.

I like it when people ask if we are hiring installers. Of course they are never certified and their cars/systems always look like complete shit. Friends don't let friends install car audio.

As a buisness owner, I would NEVER hire someone that had there ears streached, visable tattoos, or there apperiance didnt look professional, and with my buisness you only see clients once every 3 weeks or so.

I own a Quiznos and i have a lot of applicants walk through the door looking for a job. Some of them had tank top on, cigs in their hands. One guy was talking on his bluetooth while asking for an application!!!! There is one guy that just blows my mind, he came in and said, "hey, let me get an application" while talking on his phone, had blue jeans, tank top and flip flops on. He was extremely rude, so when i told him no, he had the nerve asking me why? I just don't understand what people think now a days.
