Its a catch 22 .. I agree with what some of you are saying.. But don't let appearance full you...

Because you are dressed up all nice, you think that means you work ? That can be a cover up and just because you come in wearing jeans and maybe looking a little rough doesnt mean you suck at life...

Is a 50/50 deal.. Once you done alot of hiring or worked with a H&R department before, you will understand what Im saying.....

    Peace.

but you still want to make that good first impression. If you come in unshaven, no recent haircut, and dirty then the impression you are giving is that you are going to come ino work looking like that too.

Umm my point was, why, if you really need a job, would you come in looking like you are going to hang out at a friends house. I will be more apt to hire someone that comes in dressed well, than someone who isn't. Common sense.

Of course I try not to let people FOOL me either

    LOL

Just had another guy come in with Shorts, an Abercrombie T-shirt, and Flip Flops asking if I was accepting applications.

When I told him I would take a resume, he asked me what that was.

    my personal update...

even w/ my current job situation...even going to see someone i know that works at a place that has a possibility of getting me a job i wear khakis, polo/button up, or if i wear jeans, they are clean and not wrinkled. i look professional when i walk in and hand in resumes and applications (or check on applications). if you want/need a job, you have to dress appropriately to each job. i mean hell if you have one place you need to go that requires dress up, go to all of the places you are checking out that day dressed up, they will respect you and know you mean business. dont go in looking like a retard.

bwahaha did he not go to school or what??? lol

everything u guys are saying is so true. i went to get a job at frontera, to get the application i went in with a polo, dress pants and some nice shoes. as i walk into the frontera i go to the front cashier and the manager was talking to a guy that had just asked for an application, guy was looking bad. i mean he had a beard of atleast a week. hoodie, and swimming trunks or atleast they looked like they wear cause they were all colorful and shit and flip flops. manager said they werent hiring. im glad i still asked for an application anyways because he gave me one, even though i hadnt fill it out he had already asked me when i could come in for an interview.

    looks matter.

Doesn't always work this way either though. I went in for an interview a couple years ago for a job. Dressed in khakis, nice polo shirt, and nice shoes. When I got to the interview the two guys interviewing me were in tailored suits and ties. They looked at me as if I was a bum off the street. Then the guy I "would" have been working directly for walks in to ask me some questions and he is wearing khakis and a polo shirt. My point is that I learned that day you have to pretty much overdress for the interview, and then get comfortable after you have the job. First impressions are everything because people in authority are shallow.

    Overdressing is the key.

I applied at a Survey company, went in with dress slacks and a button down shirt and tie. Boss said, "well, you are the best dressed surveyor I've seen, but I appreciate you dressing for the interview. Most younger applicants don't have the self-respect to do so." Needless to say I got the job.

My current job, I dressed in a suit, my boss interviewed me in jeans and a polo. He told me he was impressed thar I would dress to that extent, but that I didnt have to from that point on.

I always go in in slacks, dress shoes, and AT LEAST a polo, usually a full button down, and if I feel the need sometimes a tie. First impression goes a long way, I am always saying yes sir/yes ma'am and maintaining eye contact with the interviewer. I do not smoke so I dont have to worry about that, but I always make sure I have on some cologne and fresh breath too.

Oh, and correct me if I am wrong here, but isnt it illegal to deny giving someone an application? Because they can say you were discriminating by not giving them an application. That is what I have always been told at my jobs where I personally handed out applications, that you cannot deny giving someone an application due to equal opportunity employment.

thats true as well. as far as i can i usually scope out the prospective place i will work/get an application and take a hint from what they wear to what i should wear when i go in and get an application or go in for an interview. for instance i dropped of a resume this week, i saw that the atmosphere is the same way it is here where i still work. khakis and polo/button up, would be more than sufficient for that place as well. it depends on where u go..another example, i went to drop off an application at the adidas outlet, i know they are sports gear oriented so i wore my regular 'street' clothes, just made sure it was all ironed and clean...u have to make sure where you go of what you should wear

It's all because they can't afford to pay the water bill to shower/wash their clothes.

Even at Adidas, I still would dress up.

That's me, I am though, more comfortable in my slacks and button downs at this point than my "street clothes" for work.

Unless Adidas told me I had to wear jeans and their shoes, I would probably wear slacks every day

I FEEL WHAT YOU ARE SAYING AND I CAN AGREE. EVEN THOUGH THE DRESS ATMOSPHERE THERE ARE BALL SHORTS, SNEAKERS AND T SHIRT, I STILL WISH I WENT AT LEAST WITH MY KHAKIS AND BUTTON UP/POLO. I KNOW WHEN I GOT THIS JOB I HAVE NOW, I CAME IN JSUT FOR THE INTERNSHIP, I CAME IN WITH A TIE, BUTTON UP, GREY PANTS...STARTED WORK WITH THE SAME STYLE OF DRESS UNTIL I WAS TEASED FOR COMING IN LOOKING LIKE AN EXEC LOL
