I started with Canons years ago and I have already got a full outfit for them as long as they stick with an EOS system. If I were to do it again, I would still go with Canon.

You are comparing apples and apples- you wont go wrong with either one.

It is up to you. Go to Best Buy or Wolf and fondle both and see which one feels better in your hands and which one has the better control layout for you. They are both about the same.

I checked the Canon Xsi but it looked really cheap for some reason. I also heard that the liveview feature on it sucks... (I know that the D80 doesn't
    actually have that feature)

Don't get D80, put little bit more money toward D90 and you won't regret. D90 shares a lot of features of D300. It has same sensor as D300, but packs with the lastest technologies with fraction of cost of the D300. Check out the reviews on google. Here is one of them: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm
I say this not because D90 has D movie mode. I don't care about Live View mode or D movie. I used the own D80, then I switch to D90 and could not be happier. It is far better than D80. Try out both before you decide which one is more suitable for you.

I've got a Nikon D50 which I have enjoyed for the last 3 years, and I'll think I will keep using it until it falls apart... or until I just have every piece of amazing glass I could dream of.

I've got a Canon Rebel XSi. Liveview only works, in Manual, aperature priority, shutter priority, automatic depth of field, and Program AE modes. doesn't work in any of the automatic modes. i guess they are saying shooting in automatic doesn't matter. hahaa. Manual is much better.

Yeah but the D90 is kinda out of my price range... It's about $900 just for the body while I found the D80 online for $520 with a 18/55 lens....

For the price that the D80's are going for since they replaced them with the D90's, the D80 is a STEAL for a DSLR over anything else at this moment in time for what you are getting for your money. But yea, I would have to say the D90 shrouds that, and the D300 shrouds that, and the D3 shrouds that lol.
I just have a D60 but I love the feel of it and I can't appreciate enough how small and light it is. I could appreciate a larger lens selection with DX compatibility but more are coming out and I wouldn't need anything more than the DX lenses they already offer.

x2, I personally like my XSi alot, but with either company you're making a good choice. It's all up to your personal preference when it comes down to it.

What's the point of owning a DSLR if you use it in automatic mode? The photos will be no better than a basic point & shoot.

I loved live preview on my Sony point & shoots but I always shot in manual even on them. I can count on one hand how many times I used an automatic mode on my XTI the first year I had it, once I got the flash it was a different story...the only time I use an automatic mode is occasionally in portrait mode only when using a flash.

ken rockwell is a perfectly legit single source for information...

As with anything you have to take a little info from here, a little from there, little from there and combine into your own opinion. There is some good info on his site along with some bad info(my personal opinion).

I shoot Canon myself, but you'll end up with the same results on ANY camera(given the tech specs match up in technical data such as noise, sharpness, etc.) and they'll be as good as you are. Simple as that. When you get better, so will the pictures, but the tools you use to get it are nearly irrelevant. It's like asking what type of pencil to buy when you want to get into drawing. At first, not even the most expensive best pencil will matter for shit if you can't draw, then as you get a feel for the craft, you'll work your way up to the level of that pencil.

I disagree. I think pencil type does matter.

youmissed the point about it not helping at all if you sucked at drawing. Also: With cameras, it's more of a class system so the pencil was bad example. It's like, two cameras in the same market niche will beabout equal like:

    Entry level:
Canon Rebel XSi = Nikon D60
    Advanced Amature:
    Canon 50D = NikonD90
    Pro-sumer
    Canon 5D = Nikon D700

    etc.

I'm not a pro by any means, but I love my Nikon. I have a D40, and I really like the overall setup.

Umm... You can use Every Minolta Autofocus Lens made since the mid-80s on any of the Sony DSLRs out today.

Lots of Tamron and Sigma lenses fit as well.

Minolta made some VERY quality glass.

Not only that, but since the Sony bodies all have Vibration Reduction/Super Steady Shot... Every lens you put on a Sony body gets the benefit rather than having to buy special lenses.

Umm.. how in the world does a 12 MPixel Canon Xsi = a 10 Mpixel Nikon D60? More like Canon Xti = Nikon D60.

The Xsi matches up against the D80
