Thank you guys for all your input.
I am trying to get into photography and want to start out with a decent camera.
I am probably going to take some classes so I can learn more.
I am going by wolf camera this afternoon to get a feel for a camera

Your mom is regretting it? What is holding her back? I doubt it is the body.

As for my Sony statement, I was going by the Sony Glass. I had no idea that you could use Minolta glass on the Alphas. I stand corrected on that aspect.
Even if you already said it, I didn't read the whole thing, and I used the word ignore because too many people are like "you should buy this exact camera" and I wanted them weeded out. Does that make more sense?

^^ Yeah, I drew a frame of a man running on each fan blade. That is him running at idle

Then start looking for a Nikon. I know Chadbee and Kustom both shoot with the entry level Nikons so might want to talk to them a lil more about those. Hit up www.KEH.com and keep a look out on craigslist as sometimes some decent ones pop up there.

I wanna be able to take some amazing pics and be able to adjust the photos to make some crazy shots. Will a d40 do that? Exscuse my photography retardedness I know not any of the words and terms of photography.
I am wanting to get into photography as a hobby right now but I may want to take classes so That I can maybe eventually get a job being a photographer. I love taking pictures of everything people places things and any advice would be great

I personally do not like the d40 because of what lens you are forced to buy and you do not have access if you want AF.

I am a Canon guy and prefer it. Why not jump into a Canon XT or XTi and start learning?

XT is a good camera. A bit dated but put good glass in front of it with a good photog behind it and you will realize great photos.

    AF = Auto Focus

All you need to know is this:

    1. ub3r l33t equipment does not make you a good photographer.

    2. There are only about 3 people in this thread that are really qualified IMO to give great advice.

    3. Looking into photography as a main career is just as likely as becoming Americas Next Top Model.

    4. Start learning fundamentals, what everything means, and what people are using OUTSIDE OF A CAR FORUM. Not to be rude, but a car forum is the last place to really learn about good photography and the industry. Do your own foot work, its not hard, its called google.

    Hope this helps you.

so true!!! LOL and to be honest im not one of those 3 people, i dont know jack about canon cause, well, i shoot with nikon and have never really looked into canon stuff. hell i still ask people for advice all the time, but i dont ask here

just google camera reviews, there are lots of places that test camera and give you results.

car forums arent the place to learn, everybody here just says "siiiick pictures dude" the only reason i have sucked alittle less is cause i post on photography forums where i get flamed cause i suck, they tell me why i suck and then i correct my suckness. plus i put the time into learning the basics.

like nemesis said dont expect to make a living off of it, i promote my photography and try to pay for new equipment with work but to be honest i get maybe 2 $100-$200 shoots a month, if im lucky. your best bet is to go to school for something that will allow you to afford nice equipment and then read some books and just learn with experience.

    Yah! Only listen to me!

    roflmao

I would first choose a camera that fits your budget and feels good in your hands. If it feels good and is easy for you to use it is going to make it that much easier to learn in my opinion.

As said you cannot expect to just start now and make some money as a pro. It takes time and exposure. You have to be sticking with it and in my opinion you can make some side money doing it but if you want it as a career you need to do it full time and not be afraid to get try and 'force' your name and pictures out there.

I mean hell, I was happy when a site approcahed me asking me to upload my fall colors landscape

Well it has been said already. Ball is in your court to find out what fits your needs. You have already said the Nikon felt good to you, then persue that avenue. Get on some photography forums and see what kind of feedback people are giving for lenses, bodies, how they took a shot, what the settings of some of your favorite shots were. It takes time to learn the skills, I am still learning and try and find the photogs that are the tops in my area of photography and seek their advice, feedback, guidance.

And please do not think you are going to have a career in photography in a short amount of time. It takes time to build a name, show your skill, and begin lining up paying jobs. With the debut of "consumer" DSLR's the market has shrunk even more. Can it be done still? Yes. Time, prove your skill, and a TON of networking.

I will go take a class, Then I am going to go talk w/ the guy who shot my wedding and follow him around like a mule on several of his jobs. Right now it will just be a hobby. I thank you above all....you have answered every question I have had. I am not looking to make a career of this any time soon if at all. I want to do this as a hobby for years before I would even trying getting into this as a career. I know I can't just jump in and do it all in one year or five. I just want to jump in and start a hobby and see where it takes me.

I may have this backwards but the d40 and d40x bodies do not Auto Focus. You have to use certain Nikon mount lenses that have motors in the lens. Thus this is a smaller market and means more expensive.

A d50 for instance uses all the standard Nikon mount lenses and has an AF motor in the body as most dSLR cameras do.

Ok, I'm going to give a fully unbiased summary of what I have collected over my interest of photography, and hopefully, even Nemesis won't disagree(we always get in debates over photography for some reason).

You want autofocus is is a good feature to have. And it can be turned off if you want, so drop the idea of "no autofocus capability > the option to have AF."

The Nikon D40, D40X, andD60 all lack the in-body focus motor, and this means you cannot use older Nikon lenses with the feature of autofocus. You can still focus manually, but it's much slower, and can be reletively hard to get right through the tiny D40 and other entry level viewfinders(especially if you've used a full frame film camera's viewfinder). For those aforementioned Nikons, you have to buy AF-S lenses, with an in-lens autofocus motor, rather than a body driven focus. Is this bad? Well, not if you're buying new Nikon lenses, but if you're scrounging around for old film lenses on Ebay to save money, they may not AF. If you go the Nikon route, Get an older D50, D70, or D70s with some nicer old lenses, for the budget route. If you don't mind saving the money on a brand new body, but risk more expensive lenses, go for a newer D40, D40X, or D60. If you want the best of both worlds, try and get a D80(or D90 might be out, I haven't followed up on it).

If you go the Canon route, you can use all EF mount lenses back to 1987, my cheap ass has 2 EF lenses BOTH with 1987 time stamps on the mount. Each lens cost me roughly $80. They're older, and autofocus a tad bit slower than their newer counterparts, but they perform like $350 lenses (about middle class lenses by today's standards).

Sony lets you use the Minolta line of lenses, which are nice and cheap, but Sony seems to have control issues with developing their OWN media (Memory Sticks, Blu Ray, a special hot shoe for flashes, etc. etc.) and they might keep switching things up for a little while.

Pentax cameras are really full featured, and the newest models are made in a way to accept all Pentax lenses made in the past 50 years, through adapters. Some features may not make it into translation on the body, such as obviously not having autofocus on a 30 year old lens, but the oldies can be cheaper than dirt.

Olympus cameras I'm not too knowledgeable on, so I'd rather not say something false.

I don't know if I missed any but I hope all this helps. Pretty much any brand will yield you the same results, they each have their pros and cons.

For this question I would say ask the Nikon guys (Nemesis, Chadbee, and Kustom). I think Chad and Kustom are both using D50. So might want to look at those. I would suggest going onto www.dpreview.com and researching the Nikon models that you are looking at and see what features they have that suits you. And yes, you want Auto focus.

you can take crazy shots with just about any camera..remember this A good photograph has qualities that display the skill, art, interests, and personality of the photographer..A great photograph will tell a great story.....but a lot of people fail to realize (especially on here) that photography is more than just snapping a pic..You gotta be able to be able to get your lighting down as well also..

canon or nikon you honestly can't go wrong..Like Matt says, get a feel what u like best..its like test driving a car....just do your homework and you'll come out pretty satisfied.

WARNING: if want a job becoming a professional photographer, how deep are your pockets.? because the amount you'll spend on a car is just a fart in the wind on what u can spend on photo equipment...

but Matt(A.P) and George(Nemesis) pretty much summed it up..theyre by far the ones i would trust most on this topic..

    good luck
