Get on some photography forums and see what kind of feedback people are giving for lenses, bodies, how they took a shot, what the settings of some of your favorite shots were. It takes time to learn the skills, I am still learning and try and find the photogs that are the tops in my area of photography and seek their advice, feedback, guidance.
And please do not think you are going to have a career in photography in a short amount of time. It takes time to build a name, show your skill, and begin lining up paying jobs. With the debut of "consumer" DSLR's the market has shrunk even more. Can it be done still? Yes. Time, prove your skill, and a TON of networking.
