How powerful is your carb'd 6-port? I've been thinking of switching to a carb setup but I'm afraid I'll lose a lot of driveability or maybe even some power, haha.

Here's mine. I own and love a 88 Merkur XR4TI. I love this platform because they are Very fun to drive. They handle like they are on rails, RWD and come stock with a Garrett T3. and the biggest thing is they are very rare but inexpensive to buy and tune.

I finally got off my ass and took some new pics of mine '80s sports car goodness.

Behold the dirtiest 1984 Porsche 944, evah!

I've owned this the longest and driven it the least. Of the 7 years or so that I've had it it's only really run for about as many months. I bought the car to replace a totaled 1982 BMW 320is. After DDing the 944 for 6 months or so the head gasket blew. Then she sat. I went back and forth about rebuilding the engine, just replacing the head gasket or doing a performance rebuild. I finally decided to get her running again and did the head gasket job. From sitting the seals were in pretty rough shape, so enter another '84 parts car. Swapped engines, and the parts car engine was strong.

Took the car to Roebling Road for a NASA-SE track weekend and spun a rod bearing. Currently, the car has the original engine back in it, but there's something not quite right about it again, it burns oil and sounds like it has a rod knock. She needs another engine, and will get one eventually or a rebuild.

Merkurs kick ass. I'd love to score one sometime if I ran across one for the low.

As an update to the RX7. I started smelling fuel inside the car and under the hood and after some research realized that my fuel system dampener is fucked up and leaking gasoline onto my engine and hot exhaust. Nice eh? So instead of paying 140$ for a new one, I ordered a banjo bolt from Earl's for like 18$ shipped. So my RX7 is gonna be parked until that thing comes in. Boo. At least the car didn't go up in flames on me. Lawlz @ crappy Mazda parts.

Ok. Time to post some of my Old Old Schoolers.

Vector Mk II Baby. Skyway Tuff IIs. Vector Bars. Tuff stuff.

My brothers old 510. Brought it from a guy named Wyvern. Smoothass 510 man.

My 260. All steel body mods. No fiberglass anywhere. RB25 swap, open downpipe aimed at the ground. Loud as fook.

56 Pymouth Rat Beater. LOVED that car.

50 Pontiac Fastback. Caddy V8 clipped, slammed suspension and a Butterfly hood that wasn't latched in the front. When you got on the highway it would start flapping and talking to you.

    IMG]

My 85 Toyota Corolla. 4AGZ converted to Turbo, stand-alone, grip of (Shudder to even say it) JDM parts. Gona but never forgotten.

And my not really an Old SChool but can still park in the Old School section of the meets (YEA QD....*grins*) M30. RB20 swapped. Yummy pimpness.

Thats part of my history.. Wish I had photos of my 4 510s, 2 240Zs, 3 FB s. RX4 with 13b swap (Rock on Durwood Simpson) and the many many others i've owned in my 20 years of driving.

    Enjoy.

Almost how low it will sit once I have drop spindles and the motor/tranny is in...

Right now I'm getting everything ready for the motor/tranny to be dropped in. I still have to buy a fuel cell, fuel lines, finish putting the traction bars on, wire the MSD, get a battery, etc...

How much would you guys hate me if I swapped a 302 into my FB? Don't reply to this post unless you have considered all bonuses of a 302 swap (gas mileage, power, reliability, maintenance).

I dunno man. I love the FB for its styling 1st. The performance and efficiency/reliability is questionable.

I have a question though for anyone who automatically shuns the 302 or any V8 swap in an RX7. Why? Just because its a Ford engine in an import? I just don't see why its such a big deal to so many people. I won't even THINK of posting this kind of stuff on RX7club, I'd get banned, rofl.

Because true classic import enthusiasts don't go against the grain like that. I've NEVER been a fan of brand-swapping. People putting Chevy engines in Porsches and shit like that? Hardcore classic Japanese car fans have no room for that. You have a Mazda so it should be a Mazda engine under the hood. It just takes away from the nostalgia of the car. You want a Chevy engine, buy a Chevy. That's the way it is viewed. Later, QD.

Well thats just stupid. I think I'm going to put a Ford motor in my Mazda then. I'm not going to care if I don't look hardcore running 12's, or getting over 20mpg in my RX7. As stated, I love these cars because of the aesthetics, not because of the 'superior' drivetrains. Thanks for your opinion though, you helped me make my decision. More or less.

Ok. Well first off. You will need to figure out your ignition. The problem with putting an old 302 or any with a distributor is that Fords are in the front of the motor...therefore you will have a nice fat boy distributor poking from your hood.

I had an FB with a 400 Small Block in it. WORST driving car I ever set foot in. The hood latch had to be cut out for the Chevy dist which is in the back of the motor. The carb with breather on it, even with a low rise intake was JUST flush with the hood. Meaning, there was still a hole in the hood but the only thing you realy saw sticking up over the sail line was the bolt and wingnut of the carb. Had a Checellve rear end under it, cut down and a turbo 350 trans.
Also had cinder blocks wired into the rear end to make it get traction. Drove like 4 fat bitches in a Hyundai. If you were going in a straight line, it was the Batmobile....soon as you hit your first turn, either you were under 30 mph or you were in the trees.

Unless you got a good bit of money to throw at it to do it right. Don't bother wasting your time.

Wow. Take offense much? Lose the cockiness, moron, and come back down to Earth. It's your car so do what you want with it. You asked me a fucking question and I answered it. Sorry, I hurt your feelings with it. Get over it. Ooops, I just realized. I'm not sorry.

Damn QD, you sure are a dick about almost nothing. I wasn't taking offense to anything you posted. It seems as though you were taking offense to me NOT taking offense, haha. Calm down dude, no need to insult me because I want a V8 in my Mazda. Whats that all about anyway? If you really think I'm that cocky and that big of a moron, why don't you have a gander in the mirror.

As far as the swap itself, I've driven ONE FC with a 302 and it was actually a pretty tame car. Extremely quick when you wanted it to be, but no worse driving than my FB is now for DD. I also will not need to cut up anything to get the motor into my car. There are many people running the Grannys mount kit and the engine fits perfectly with all stock sheet metal. The stock GSL-SE rear end can hold the power of a lightly modded 5.0 so I don't see the need in upgrading that aspect.

Anyone else have an opinion that can be reasonable and level-headed? I really am open to hear it unless you are just going to be silly like QD.

I'm not taking offense to anything. You want to throw out name calling, I'll definitely one up on it. You get cocky with me and I return the favor. Two-fold. You want to have a legitimate, adult discussion, we can definitely have that. But don't come in here with the "stupid" shit and expect not get back what you put in.

Its kinda hard to be a "brand Nazi" now a days because most car companies blend chassis' and motors all the time. (honda 3.2 in the saturn vue, ford and mazda are joined at the hip also.) I'd compare most of us to the guys who used to build hot rods back in the 40's 50's on down. the routinely put whatever motors and parts in their rides to get the job done (chevy v8 in a 32 ford, caddie big block in a drag setup etc.etc.etc) and if it looked good to them. they swapped different bumpers, tail lights and fenders to achieve the ideal look. My personal opinion is this "scene" is always supposed to be about individual expression with a shared love of cars as a whole.

You're absolutely right. For the cars of today. But for the early (60s, 70s and early 80s) years, it wasn't about brand swapping. It was taking what you had and building it to the fullest. But the majority of the enthusiasts are purists when it comes to these cars. They want a Honda to be a Honda; not a Ford swapped Honda or a Chevy swapped Toyota. People putting B or D series engines into the 1st gen Civics like mine. There's a guy putting an S2K engine in a '67 S800. Putting a new Honda engine in an old Honda is a little different. Me, I'm a true purist. I kept everything straight old school. I have an Accord engine in my Civic, but it is from an Accord of the same year.

I'm not downing anyone who does whatever just because I don't like it. It's not my thing and props to whomever does it. Like SKarpenz said, he'd be beheaded if he posted his idea on another forum. I agree with them, but it's his car. And it's not up to me to bash his ideas. I just let him know how I feel. As he asked. So this isn't really that old school, but it is 80's and a rare car to see driving around. I should have kept it and gotten some smoked headlights, everything else was dark on it lol.

    Factory turbo 80's Ford goodness.

I've had a lot of second gen rx7's and a first gen or two but nothin' really special to post here. I need to find pics of my old ae86.

    This is for SKarpens.

Not my car, but it was an old roommate's racecar. This is the third and final incarnation of Rob's "madness".

The car was a 1984 or '85 FB with a Ford 302, Miata IRS, Megasquirt, and all the safety equipment necessary for a racecar. He raced it in NASA's ST2 class. The car was totalled at Rockingham, the road course not the drag strip, a couple of years ago when the backend came around and the car hit the outside wall in NASCAR turn 2.

I think Rob posted on RX7Club about the build and was nearly crucified.

I found a link to Rob's cardomain page with better pics of some of the mods. The final engine in the car was a stock fuel injected 5.0 engine from a '93 Mustang, iirc.

Hmm. Mine was done in like 87 so hell if I know on mount kits these days.

Sounds to me though like your minds made up. What you asking us for? You ask a question and then whenever anyone answers it with their opinion, you give out a rebuttal to it. If your mind is so made up, why you asking us? Sounds like you wanted a fight.

Shrugs. I say go for it. Do what you want man. Don't let any of us more or less make your mind up for you.
