worst accident i've been in...happened almost 3 years ago, i was in the front passenger seat. 5 of us are in the small lexus SUV, on I-95, heading to this reggae concert. two cars collide in the 2nd leftmost lane, and one of them comes spinning in our direction. the driver tries to avoid the spinning car and our SUV rolls over a few times...
it was hot outside so we had the windows down, and i (ironically, STILL) have a bad habit of holding onto the roof of the car when the windows are down...so basically what happened is my right hand got smashed in the rollover...
i blacked out for a sec when the car rolled over. when i came to, the car was upside down in the middle of the hwy, and i remember being a little annoyed that blood got all over my new shelltoes LOL...until i saw where it was coming from. then it started to hurt...i remember looking at my hand to make sure i could move it still, wrapping it in a t-shirt i found in the car, and crawling out of one of the broken back windows out onto the hwy.
it's crazy to walk away from a wreck like that, stand in the middle of the interstate, look back...and see ALL 7 lanes blocked. i'll never forget it. it was almost an hour before the paramedics got me, and probably another 2-3 hrs before i got anything for the pain (which was...intense to say the least), cuz they operated that same night.
i spent a week in the hospital and had to get reconstructive surgery on my hand...4 fingertips were crushed...and i had severe road burns on the back of my hand. but luckily my thumb was completely unharmed (and that's the most important finger on your hand).
my hand is cool now, i had to re-learn how to do a lot of things since i'm right handed...but it didn't take too long. by the end of the week i was writing again (although it was sloppy and hurt like hell, lol), and after a few weeks i could drive, type, etc again. now i'd say i have about 90-95% functionality back. lucky for me the damage was mainly cosmetic...
one thing i will say about recovering from serious injuries is that a huge part of it is mental. it's good to read and see other folks kept their head up and are still doing their thing. shit happens...and life is too short to live it in fear
