Hey krissy, the notice was on the front door of your house? How did they know what house was yours? By the parking spot it was in or the running the tag? Talk to the officers supervisor, don't even bother with the officer himself. Demand the car be returned with any lost wages you can come up with. If they saying something about the VIN on the dash tell them there was a small electrical fire ruining the original dash and it was replaced with one from a salvaged vehicle. As you mentioned, the door jamb, on the firewall, and on the fenders (if they haven't been replaced) all have the correct VIN number on it.
