It uses the same detachable clips as the AK, same ammo as most AK's (7.62x39), ammo is fairly cheap, and it's pretty much easy to dissassemble and clean. Do NOT use corrosive ammo, even if it's given to you for free. Ammo at gun shows has to be scrutinized a little sometimes because of that.
Um, if by 'AK-47 knock off' you mean 'was replaced by the AK-47', then yes, you're correct.

The AK was created after the SKS, and improved on it's design, which is why it became the predominant rifle. SKS was still cheaper to produce tho.
