An SKS is simply an AK47 knock off. It works very well for what it is. It may not have all the bells and whistles of a true AK, but you won't really notice those things unless you are a gun afficionado and are looking for something in particular.

It uses the same detachable clips as the AK, same ammo as most AK's (7.62x39), ammo is fairly cheap, and it's pretty much easy to dissassemble and clean. Do NOT use corrosive ammo, even if it's given to you for free. Ammo at gun shows has to be scrutinized a little sometimes because of that.

Um, if by 'AK-47 knock off' you mean 'was replaced by the AK-47', then yes, you're correct.

The AK was created after the SKS, and improved on it's design, which is why it became the predominant rifle. SKS was still cheaper to produce tho.

The SKS this gentleman is talking about is a NORINCO (chinese) SKS and not a Soviet SKS45 which as you pointed out came a few years before the AK47. The AK47 used the same gas operation and bolt action, but used a completely different receiver, detachable mag, and select fire mechanisms.

You and I, and maybe a couple of other people here, know that the AK47 was developed a few years after the SKS technically, but the vast majority of the "SKS" that remain around for general public are the Chinese models which are knock offs of the AK. This is why I was saying that it's probably a "knock off" because if he had bought an original SKS45, he would've known what he had and not asked for any advice.

You are correct, but I think you understand where I'm coming from.

I don't know if this is rational, but everything Norinco makes scares the bejeesus out of me.

i'm pretty sure the sks was made before the ak and it is known to be one of the most reliable guns of the world infact many people like the sks over the ak and others due to it's toughness. i wish i had one but i also like my ak
