You guys do realize that as far as precious stones go, diamonds are actually among the least rare, right?

Christ, $16,000 for a ring that should cost 1/5 of that. THANKS DEBEERS.

LOL. Is the Mart a good place. We get our diamonds from there? They're always like 1/3 of the price.

Everyone gets their diamonds from DeBeers, who currently has a worldwide monopoly on the diamond market.

The practices of some of these diamond mines is beyond the pale (you know, things like cutting off your foot if they catch you trying to smuggle out a stone, etc.)

DeBeers, being a monopoly, can set the price of a diamond to whatever they want, artificially restrict their availability, invent clever marketing schemes, whatever it takes to make it seem reasonable to pay $10,000 for a freaking rock.

Like I said.. if you want a really rare stone, get a ruby or something.

Or, if you want the next best thing (and in many ways better) to diamonds, buy a moissanite stone: www.moissanite.com
