Default Shade tree mechanics, I need help please

Got an 03 Elantra, has 102,000 miles. 2.0 4 cyl DOHC. Has a rod knocking since last night, cant/no way in hell afford to put an engine in this car. Im going to try and replace the bearing and put brown paper (lunch bag type) on the outside of the bearing. Anyone got any other ideas, maybe something better? Just looking for a temp fix, if it doesnt work Ive lost $20. If it does Ive put off $1000+ that I dont have right now.

Because thats not going to help in this case. It sounds like the bearing has probably spun around and stacked on top of each other at this point.

Ive already talked with them, they refuse to do anything because I dont have full service records on the car.

Yes, I know of two people who have done it. One lasted 2 years, the other the guy sold the car after 3 months. The paper will be on the back side sandwhiched between the bearing and rod. Its not going to be on the crank where its spinning.

You could make your own shims out of metal for the bearings. Wouldn't be that difficult, just get some super-thin aluminum sheets. You could probably pick it up at a hobbylobby or Hobbytown. Couldn't hurt any worse than using paper.

in all honesty i dont see where the paper will help. the issue you are going to have is that if it spun a bearing most likely your crank is scarred. best backyard fix i can see in this scenario is to pull the old bearings out, install the new bearings with some thread locker or something of the sort on the backside, but not blocking the oil passage, to help hold the new bearing in place. as long as the crank isnt scarred up too bad and the rod isnt bent it should hold, but your only gonna be prolonging the inevitable, and if you dont fix it correctly there is a chance that when it DOES come apart again, it could throw a rod and then you need a whole new block, not just a crank and bearings. i cant bring myself to suggest that you sell it once you have it patched because i wouldnt be able to do that to someone. i would save some money and just buy a crank kit for it and be done with it.

All I want to do. And when it does come apart it would be cheaper to put a junk yard engine in it, I wouldnt rebuild this one.

And no it wont be sold like that, just want to drive it until its paid off.

WAX paper Douche..NOT brown paper bag! BTW this is JOSHUAASE!!! A temp fix is to install new bearings, 1 size over an you can smooth the crank out just a hair if needed with sand paper, its GHETTO but works, an tighten it down an rock get rid of the car ASAP!....Also I used a peice of leather like a thin belt, before, take the bearings out..Soak the leather in oil over night to make it soften up, an install, will work long enough to sell/get rid of it..I dont reccomend selling it to anyone , but hey what ever helps you out.......If it was me I would try the oversize bearing sand crank down just to smooth it out alittle bit...an use 20 w50...later

most likely either its a vaccum leak , Those intakes suck!

Or its a bad MAF which is common

The intake was replaced with the updated version because it was leaking... but it could be leaking again. I might have a spare MAF I can stick on it

temp fixes range from coke cans to paper eh?

Depending on how much trash got in the oil system, and how much oil pressure is on that journal, i dont see how putting paper in there would really hold you off for a bit.

and if that crank is really scarred, a new bearing will just get all torn up.

Pull it apart and take pics of the bad journal.

Got another issue, driving home last night and it lost spark. Still no spark today, could this have anything to do with the knocking and PCM shutting it down or something? I need help with that now.

I would suspect a low oil pressure disable. Don't know if that car has one or not though.

I've used feeler gauges to shim loose bushings in motorcycle forks. It seems to me that in your application, you could get a more accurate, and perhaps longer lasting, fix by using something of a specific thickness to shim up the bearing. Just size it out, do the math, and use the right feeler gauge blade. Just a thought...

When a bearing spins, the journal isn't round anymore, it gets egg shaped. There is really no good way of a temporary fix. I would just get an oversized bearing, some heavy weight oil, some lucas, and park it till someone wants to buy the car.

try aluminum foil or cut some spacers out of a coke can, or get the next size up in bearings. b sure to polish the journal with emery cloth sand paper about 400 grit. but when the bearing spun it probably egged out and stretched the rod if they stacked up then it wont last 30 seconds maybe a little longer. good luck...
