Default What's the easiest way to hook up a shift light?

I'd like to try to make a custom shift light and place it somewhere in my dashboard. What i was wondering is, what would be the easiest way to hook up or create a custom shift light?

I've heard of the thing where you use a frequency sensor and it converts the frequency into voltage, and thats where you hook up the light, but im not so sure i'd like to go that particular route with it. I'd like to keep the creation/installation as simple as possible. Any other ideas on how to do this?

get one of the AutoMeter shift lights with a pill. I'm running the Cobalt RMP gauge w/ 7 color led shift light. I love it. Just looks like a gauge.

thats exactly what im doing now, but since i kinda need a new dizzy.... My tach starts jumping all over the place, and twitching and itchin and stuff when i start to push my motor hard, so i figure it would be easier to just get a shift light instead of relying on my hearing and then a screwed up tach.

I think all i have to do is really bolt down the tach signal wire, cuz i removed the boltdown on it a while ago to do my headgasket and i never put it back....

I know exactly what you're talking about, but i dont want all those lights. I just want one simple light located IN my dash somewhere that'll light up when i hit redline...

Ok - 1st man, deal w/ your dizzy issues - that can cause more problems (buringin through cats, heating up the cat, or eventually put you beside the road waiting on a tow truck. Business b4 pleasure.

2ndly, there are all types of covert-style shift lights on the market - some pencil thin that you'd never even know was there.

Your dont set the RPM light to your redline. You set it where your powerband starts to fall. Actually, you need to set it REALLY early bc 1st is so quick of a gear you want to be able to shift b/c u over rev and lose power.

In that case, i need to have it set for 6250, cuz on my dyno thats where HP falls, and my TQ starts to fall after 5500.

Look at everyone's dyno sheet, the hp and tq curve always cross right near 5500.

The best one I like. I had it in my civic when the ECU was chipped, it would throw the CEL to let you know to shift.

Near 5252 to be exact, because of how torque and horsepower are related. Horsepower is a function of torque and RPMs when calculated, P = (T x w) / 5252.

P = Horses, T = Torque in lb-ft, w = Rotations in RPM. So for example an estimate for Horsepower at peak torque on a car with a peak torque of 200lb-ft at 3400rpm should be 129 or so. If the car hits peak HP at 6800rpm and the engine's producing more like 140lb-ft of torque, it's producing around 180hp. See kids? BUMP: just got an idea!

Would it be possible to tap my narrowband AFR gauge's signal wire into the tach signal wire and then have the AFR gauge work as sortof a shift light where it changes from red to yellow/orange to greeen, and then shift based on that??

Basically, attempting making some good use of all those random flashing lights
