If you don't like cigarettes or the smoke, stay away from them. I agree, they stink. But no one is forcing you to breathe near them. Most smokers are courteous and understand non-smokers' opinions and try to avoid contact while smoking.
I agree to disagree. Smokers do not have the right to infringe on the the safety of my public air. I shouldn't have to avoid entrances/exits to buildings, school walkways, or parking lots because of the "non-courteous" smokers. Legally, due to the obvious health threat, we can infringe on the right to smoke in public for the benefit of the safety of the general public via Supreme Court ruling Jacobson v. Massachusetts.

I, for one, being a smoker usually keep my distance from people who do not smoke as well as stay away from entrances to buildings. If it bothers you so much, ask the property managers to move the designated smoking sections.
Just throwing this out there, but smoking is an activity/addiction that one chooses to engage in. Just because you choose to do it doesn't mean someone else should suffer the consequences of it. The only reason why it's such a controversial subject is because so many Americans smoke, there has to be some justification for them to ignore other people's rights. There are really no gray areas when it comes to this. As long as you aren't disturbing other peoples' peace, then who cares?

I have never understood why people start smoking these days. I mean we know the consequences of smoking and how bad it is for you, so why start?
Because it's cool??? That question has always confused me, as well.
I can't stand being around someone who is smoking. Can I put up with it? Sure. But it's a matter of respect for other people's feelings and health. That should be enough to justify it, I think.

Because people as a collective fail miserably at thinking in the long term. We know what will eventually happen if we continue smoking, but the avg person will think "I won't get lung cancer if I smoke a couple". This is also clouded by the fact that people always assume the best outcome of a situation e.g. "there are plenty of people who don't get lung cancer who smoke their whole lives, so I wont get it"

You're good man, it's not really a big deal to me. I mean, yeah I am not a fan of it, but I can put up with it. Just make sure not to blow your smoke at Eric, unless you want to kill him that is.
As mentioned before, I steer clear of anyone who doesn't smoke. I can go hours without it so even leaving them at home won't bother me.

Smoking is like speeding, I have the same right to travel the road but to have someone whizz by me 20+ mph. I'll take walking by a designated smoking area first (there is no designated speeding zone.)

Well I was talking to a girl, but I was apparently too young for her. Damn older woman...
I smoke, yet am mindful of those who dont. I get disgusted watching some 400lb pig stuff her face at partners, as the sweat soaks from her rolls into her shirt. But as a free society, thats what we have to deal with.
Big deal, I am going to die at 75 instead of 85. Those last 10 years suck balls (other than sponge baths) anyways.
