    If you wanna cut back on the sanding time, use a dremel with a wire brush attachment. Then you can start from a higher grit paper (around 800). If you want a mirror finish, go all the way to a 2500 grit. If you just want it to be shiny then stop at a 1500 grit, rub some polish on it and be done with it.

    Closest post in here to good advice.

    First you want to get it clean. I like to let the part soak in Purple Power (degreaser; spray it on) for a good 10 minutes. Make sure the tranny is cool, not after driving for a long time. Pressure wash the degreaser off. (If you have a dremelOnce the tranny is dry, either use a wire wheel attachment on a drill, or use a little on a dremel as Psycho suggested. (If you have a ziz-wheel If you're like to get the casting marks off (not the "heatsinks"), use a 3m Scotch-Brite pad. Use the rougher pads for taking the casting marks down, and the finer/softer pads on the rest to smoothen out for a finer finish. Eventually you can start using 400 grit wet-sanding paper. I'd jump from 400 grit to 800, then 800 to 1200, then 1200 to 1500. 1500 will come pretty damn shiny, but 2000 would be the finest I'd go. Any finer and it'll be pretty pointless. Once the sanding is done and the tranny is dry, use the polishing cloth wheel on the dremel or ziz-wheel along with Mother's Aluminum polish, and go to town on polishing.

    I've polished a lot of random shit, always turns out nicely. In my machine class, I made a lathe attachment from 4140 Chromoly, and polished it. You'd think it was chrome plated. Anyone that knows about that metal, knows it's hard as fuck to even scratch, much less polish.
