Default Cosmo 2 rotor 13b-RE into 94 FD

    sup it's Z U L8R (Dave) from Lethal Injection.
It won't let me log out of Jballa's account.

This is my little brother's RX7 . He bought it because he's a rotary guy but this particular car had a bunch of extra goodies. Only bad side was the motor in it had low compression, WHAT A SHOCKER!

He's been in the Navy for 2 years as a Fire Controlman and Spytech with the Aegis Sattelite system and he's already been promoted to an E-5 pay grade because of his hard work and dedication.

But as far as cars go....... he's always been a bloody wankel.

    quick incite:

FD3S, also known as the sexiest import chassis ever, aka 1992-2002 (in US 93-95) Mazda RX7 was Mazda's "street legal race car." Mazda went as far as to use cast-aluminum control arms and drilling holes into the pedals to save 4 ounces of weight to make this car as light as possible.

The early 90's were the battle of the imports with nissan's twin turbo 300zx, and toyota's twin turbo supra, therefore Mazda's response with producing the 13b-REW twin turbo 1.3 liter wankel power plant.

During this time Mazda also created a 13b-RE motor that they put into their Cosmo which also came with their 20b 3 rotor of PWNAGE!!@#!@#!

My brother purchased this White 1994 FD Touring Edition with a couple goodies like some Reeeiiiims, Tein Coil Over's all the way around /w other adjustable suspension pieces , a Turbonetics 62-1 turbo, Greddy Profec-b Spec 2 EBC, Apexi Power FC, 3" Racing beat exhaust, TurboSmart 45mm External Wastegate, Aeromotive FPR /w bigger secondaries and a custom Fuel Rail, GReddy FMIC, Fluidyne Aluminum Radiator, 99 front bumper, 99 rear tail lights, a gay ass HKS SSQV BOV, and some ricey pillar guages and a couple other at least it's better than stock goodies.

Although it's not the rare yellow or anything like that you don't see many white FD rx7's.

The 13b-REW is what came in US third gen RX7's. The 13b-RE is the 2 rotor motor that came in the Cosmo, but the Cosmo is more known for it's 3 rotor 20b motor.

There are a bunch of differences between the 13b-RE and 13b-REW (which you'll see some pics of later), but to keep it simple, as far as performance goes, the RE motor has bigger Intake ports, and comes with bigger turbo's stock than the REW motor, therefore it makes a little more power. Pound for pound, and mod vs mod it'd make more power because of the bigger intake ports allowing the engine to breath better.

The 13b-RE's are a ton easier to put in a second gen rx7 (FC). They're pretty much bolt in because of the motor mounts etc. But they're definately a chore to put into a third gen, which is why not many people do it, and also why i wanted the challenge.

Some of the stuff needed to be fabbed/modified to make this work so here's some pics of the differences in the 2 motors and the stuff that needed modification.

here's the measurement in MM of the bigger ports on the 13B-REW (don't write the measurement in stone but it's pretty close)

here's the measurement of the smaller REW ports

here's the measurement of all the ports on a 13b-RE

here's the 13b-RE sitting in the 1994 FD engine bay. i know u like that football gasket i made

here's the crossmember modification so the 13b-RE's oil pan didn't hit the subframe

here's one of the motor mounts you'll need to put a 13b-RE into your FD. pay no attention to the sexy 280z it's resting upon

    another pic of the mount

a closer shot of the mount

a pic of the FD on the lift

and another, nice tail lights, and on the left is my new tool box , had to label all the drawers with stickers so when someone needs something i can tell them which drawer it's in. (sometimes it sux having the good tools, everyone except you is always using em >_<)

the two water pump housing assemblies and other misc parts on the ground

his turbonetics 62-1 before i cleaned it

and after. btw they have a 62mm inducer and 88mm exducer for the compressor wheel (in case u wondered, i measured it while i had it off). In retrospect a GT35R has a 61mm inducer to give you and idea of the size, too small for a rotary in my opinion.

another pic of the FD on the lift *wink pay no attention to that GT40 on that Z28 camaro /w 345's on the back :P

got bored so took some ETC pics :P

    here's Bustadog's 20b FD /w GT42

    got boost?

Elian's Porsche 944, awesome porsche motor

a close up of that beautiful rare porsche V8.....it's the 944 LS1 limited edition

lol i couldn't resist. i'll stop threadjacking my own thread. back to the subject...

Nice! I had a 13B-RE in my FC. Sadly it never ran though cause the guy I hired didnt know what he was doing.

i got the REW accessory bracket to bolt up by simply removing the top stud on the RE's timing cover. that was an easy one.

then i put the REW's crank pulley's on

after i made the RE's timing marks into it, like so

so now the motor looks something like this

since the car has an aeromotive FPR and bigger secondaries it was time to get rid of the g4y stocker crap. we had to mod the fuel rail from the REW and make it about an inch shorter and give it some mounting tabs, like so

    and

once that was taken care of, i bolted up the shiney turbo and ran into an issue with the plumbing, ie the oil return flange where it meets the motor and also the return hose just didn't reach so i needed a new longer piece of -10 steel braided hose. the 2 bolt flange on the front of the motor on the REW has the holes close to each other where as the RE's are farther apart. so we made a flange and welded a -10 steel fitting to it, voila

then i found some free time to take more whorish pics of stuff around the shop like this sexy JDM carbeurated 12A-T motorset we have. They only made this motor for 3 years and it was only in Japan, so that's why it's gangsta

    and

    and

some people don't know that motor even existed.... so now you guys do

i'll post more pics as i make more headway. i need to make a block off plate for the lower intake manifold still, and i moved the IAT from the underside of the REW upper intake to what was a banjo'd air bung on the underside of the RE's upper intake manifold. the threads were the same too

here's a pic of the REW's IAT in the RE upper intake

    here's today's progress

    and

the next 2 days i'll be cleaning up the wiring harness and making it sexy, then the Amazing Kyle's gonna freshen up aka throw the previous intercooler piping in the trash cause it looked like crap before. i'll post pics tomorrow.

we still gotta strap this puppy to the dyno and tune the power FC =]

here's the 13b-RE accessory bracket with my finger as the ruler. pay attention to the hole by the tip of my finger

here's the 13b-REW accessory bracket. notice the top hole is farther up

here's the stud you remove from the RE's timing cover to use the REW's bracket

this is what rx7 guys refer to as the "rats nest." it's what it uses to operate the twin turbo's sequentially.

you get to delete all this crap when you get rid of the stock sequential twin turbo set up and either run the twins together or go single turbo. luckily we have the single 62-1

here's how the motor looks without the rats nest under the upper intake. you can see just how clean this RE motor is by seeing how nice the stock Oil metering lines are if you look closely

here's the uber restrictive brick wall 90 degree coupler and where it was sitting that definately HAD TO GO

here's all the other couplers it had. those going in the trash too. aside from there being too damn many of them, some were dry rotted and cracking

and Kyle's sexy new and improved piping that fits under the hood support rod (unlike before) as well as the cold side which snakes nicely under the strut bar, along with upgraded 3 ply couplers instead of 1 or zero ply it had before

    and a side shot

more pics to come. since the whole plan was to get this thing running, tuned, and on the road by December 27th when my brother gets here from his ship in Maine (which is like a week away) it'll stay like this.

once he goes back to base i wanna send the turbo exhaust side, the manifold, the down pipe, all the intercooler piping as well as the intake manifold to our high temp coaters. that stuff is so BALLER! it's like heat wrapping your stuff without the expensive heat wrap and it looks like this

this is the GT30/76R s2000 stuff we're almost finished with at the shop

and a close up of the manifold

here's the fmic piping Kyle made

more pics to come, maybe even vids

Yup. My brother is the sh*t.

Now, if I could just get into the User CP to change my damn signature pic from the Blue FD that I didn't end up buying to this one. lol

And Dave, quick note....It's the Aegis WEAPONS System. A/N SPY-1D(V)...or SPY for short. Youtube it, bitches. hahaha

    :P

But man, I'm so satisfied with the incredible amount of CUSTOM work that's been done to the car in such a short amount of time. I definitely feel very blessed to have David as my brother. Oh yeah, and Kyle is a baddass too. haha

    Team Lethal FTMFW!!

I come home this Saturday night for a week. I can't wait to see it!!

Y'all should come to Lethal and check it out!

to answer "what's the power difference between the RE and REW." as far as numbers go it all depends on whether it's stock vs stock or modded vs modded, but because of the bigger intake ports the RE makes slightly more from what i've seen/heard. Rather Ironically, Wikidpedia however quotes the hp numbers mazda provided at the time which says the 13b-rew makes 265hp and the 13b-RE makes 235hp.

about the turbo 12a motor......I'd be extremely surprised if Drew sold it, but if he did I know it'd be expensive considering how rare they are. you could call the shop after the holidays and ask him though

    *UPDATE*

here's some more pics with the cowled fiberglass hood (the hood is popped btw)

the 13B-RE has the biggest intake ports, but the 13B-REW has the Biggest exhaust ports
thats why the numbers are skewed, the cosmo had smaller exhaust ports for emissions reasons.
so the formula for big 2 rotor power is Ported RE plates, ported REW housings. that only applies when building a motor though.

clean car, great swap, much love!!

had the car on the dyno today, it runs and idles 100x better, but we couldn't finish tuning it cause the turbosmart 45mm external wastegate has a rip in the diaphragm, therefore causing the wastegate not to open enough and boost to climb into unsafe levels at higher rpms.

gotta get a diaphragm overnighted come monday then we can see what she makes.

to play it safe we'll probably stay around 9-12psi until we run out all the gas that's been in the tank for gawd knows long. hopefully she'll make ~350rwhp around 14psi but we'll see what she does. she sounded strong.

    i'll update later,

    Dave

i can't wait to get my 7 on the road again, inspiration from many places.
    good luck with the car!
    btw,
white is a pretty rare factory color on an FD, second only to yellow.

Put the car on the dyno after replacing the wastegate diaphram and after a couple pulls it was evident the motor was hurt during the boost spikes. We did a compression test to confirm the rear rotor was victim of the leaky wastegate diaphram.

    RIP 13B-RE

The 13b-RE will now be fully built with hyuuuuuge ports and all. but in the meantime.....ie with a day and a half to spare we had to make quick work.

So we found a JDM 13b-REW and DE-SWAPPED the car to produce

    AT 11 PSI!!

we even had time to run the to tag office and order his prestige tag "1337 FD"
