Does Someone know how to make a custom box for a JL audio W7?

screws arent needed to build a box. if your cuts are correct and accurate and your using the correct would glue and using clamps you shouldnt run into any problems. once the glue chemically bonds with the wood your ok.

You go build a regular box with only wood glue and drop a W7 in it. Then let us know how that turns out. Yes you can build a box and make it hold together with just glue, however it will come apart over time with no reinforcement. Especially with the weight and pressure levels of a W7 in it. Why would you not take the extra few minutes to screw it together anyways?

Actualy the box i have my 10w7 in right now in my TL that i built over a year ago i used no screws in and it doesnt leak and never will leak. Screws are just good for setting the wood, once the glue is set there not needed. unless your running a huge enclosure with mulitple subs that need alor of internal bracing then "maybe" but to say a enclosure isnt built correctly because screws arent used is crazy. Ive never seen screw on a Virtual technologies box........

If it is working for you then that is great. I have had many people over the years bring their cars to me where they tried to build their boxes with just wood glue and every one sounded awful, leaked, and or fell apart, wanting it rebuilt. Like I said I would never recommend it, but if it is working for you then . Plus even for it to work it would take a shop with a very experienced woodworker with the tools for perfect joints, which most have neither. Also proper box for a W7 should have thicker walls than normal and internal bracing.

i can agree there alot of badly build boxes and badly tuned boxes running around atlanta. When i got into car audio years ago i lived by screws because when i started building boxed my cuts weren't that great on the table saw and screws make it easy and faster(being honest and humble) With time i got better and my cuts got better learned how to use the tools correctly and having a dad in carpentry work and construction helps too. most of my joins on my boxes are done on cnc or a routers which helps but i see your point.

Titebond III, once dry, isactually stronger than MDF, so why is there a need for screws? Maybe if you're building a box out of fawking titanium lol.....

I screw boxes together when I dont have the time to clamp them together and let them dry while assembling. It is mostly just a method of making sure the glue bond is 100%

All the kids that come to me with blown up boxes are just because they used screw, and no wood glue at all.

I get all my wood CNC cut so you can take a day just setting it up with glue and letting it dry. If you're not in a rush it works I guess.

Box will be straight glue. Ch@dbee's box he has for sale was glued together only.

Now you guys are finally stating the point I made earlier. Most shops do not have pro cabinet builder or the tools or know how to make perfect cuts. So it would be a bad idea to use wood glue only.

BTW. A box is NOT a box. A properly built enclosure is NOT just a box. If a box was just a box then any pre fab box would be ideal for any sub. You're statement is FTL.

What I meant by that, is that I take all the same procedures when building a box, wether it is for a W7, XXX, Type R, L7.

W7 takes a MDF box. Box, enclosure, same thing.
