    Default H-series dilemma

So, this is a slight debate me and a couple of friends have about a motor that has been purchased for a car I am working on. This is also a general question as far as settings with the ECU. Initial plans are a stock swap but gearing towards being a bolt on "build." Car will be a decent daily driver with plenty of power. For all intense purpose of this discussion, the word "stock" refers to the motor; not the car. Please keep the debate clean and neutral with no bitching. This is really a discussion for the people that know this setup (Emmino, h22jones, and a couple of friends) and exactly what I am referring to so noobs.......just sit tight and learn something. The motor has to last a while so I want opinions from every angle. There will be a possibility for high RPM runs but most of the time the car will be driven normally as a DD.

    Car: '93 Accord DX
    Motor: H23A VTEC <~~Not USDM.
Initial mods: BS intake, stock IM, stock motor internal wise, stock header, factory replacement cat, rebuilt 2.25" exhaust.
    ECU: chipped PO6

Dilemma: Redline RPM point, shift point, and VTEC crossover point.

Stock redline is 6200. Motor is known for making 197hp@6800.

8,000 hard stop to be safe want make power past 7,800 and most of them came with auto cams so probably want make power that high but safe to rev there. Vtec cross over has everything to do with the cams stock would be 5,600 rpms. If you text Scottie he has a nice base map with all this on it that I use all the time 40 shipped for a chip for a p28 ecru if I'm correct . Did that answer your question ?

I think the 6300 red line is wrong that's got to be a non vtec . If not it's just because they come behind a auto tranny not a five speed . These motor are really well built and will stay together no need to go over 8,000 though when your losing power.

Yeah Scotty is gonna chip/basemap it. I was reading up on a thread about the mysterious JDM H23A and the op posted an automatic tranny redline of 6200 so that's why I threw it out there.

    Any more question ? Lol.

The h23 vtec has 55mm mains so I wouldn't be worried about the frank like the 50 mm ones can break . I do like the older rode better because they arnt just bolts there studs sticking through the rod with nuts. If you put after market rods or at least got arp rod bolts in the h23 vtec it would be safe to turn what ever rpm . If not don't rev past 8,000

Mike pretty much nailed it, only thing I see is the exhaust may choke you if you plan on any future mods, but for stock as long as its Mandrel bent you should be fine.

Redline, vtec engagement should be adjusted accordingly while tuning. For best results.

Thanks for the input. Running into other issues at the moment which has the swap put off for another month or so. Going for a stock swap so performance is the least of my worries at the moment.

How about some Tyoe S pistons and a euro r intake? Also, a good header,no ebay crap. that motors strong like it sits, but I have seen a couple dyno charts of these H23 with Euro R and it does pretty well. Jones will steer you in the right direction. Hit him up.

You missed the part where I am doing a "stock" swap. Aftermarket is the least of my worries. I made the thread due to some confusion I had with the particular motor I have.

    this is the answer.

NOne of us can tell you the right settings until you tune it because every engine is different. Vtec engagement should be set where low cam TQ falls off, redline should be stock which IIRC is 8000-8200. Id putthe shift light around 7800 because most likely thats where it will start to fall off.

    All the rest is guessing.

oops, my bad. I know H22Jones has done a few of these motors with those pistons and its a nice starting point for some big power. I like that accord in your sig, is that what it actually looks like? i used to have a 92 with an h22 but someone wanted it more than me. good luck on your setup.

it is very nice. I loved my 92. I do love the prelude alot but I am almost ready to give up on it. I am ready to paint it soon or just get rid of it and let someone else worry about always dealing with the prelude curse. lol I am still waiting on someone ( an IA member BTW ) to hook me up with my 500.00 clear coat that is owed to me. I guess we will see if that ever happens. Again , good luck with your build man. you will def. love the h23a vtec. I have read nothing but great comments from all th guys I know on other Prelude forums. great torque and like H22jones said, they are built very well from honda.
