Boosting the rotary - need info

i'm posting this because i want to hear what you guys think about my idea. I recently bought an 86 rx7. VERY clean inside and out and the motor runs strong, no leaks, nothing, and only 120k miles..the onlything that it doesn't have is AC(big woop i got windows) and a oil metering pump..i add an ounce of 2 stroke oil per gallon of gas. its not to bad.

anyways, yes its the NA motor but i do want to throw a turbo on it because its a good motor and i do not see why not.

a lot of people talk good and bad about rotaries and yes i know they are big on maintinence and can be slightly expensive but also i hear they can handle up to 20psi fine..i dont plan on running it that high..but still, and rotaries are very hard to break/blow up if you keep the fluids fresh and etc..

should i go for it? would i have to worry about repairs all the time? and it will be my daily driver. just any hints or info would be helpful, im listening

the first page changed my whole persective on doing this lol. maybe i'll just buy a motor instead because i am limited in cash. i've been looking on tigerjapanese for TII's and prices aren't TOO bad.

I suggest you go research more about rotary engine first, then decide what to do.

Like others said, swapping T-II motor is better off because you get everything from the engine, turbo, pipings, and the most of all, the ecu. I highly not recommend to use a SFAC to tune a car with a turbo add on. That is just stupid. My friend had a supercharged s2k and he tried to run it with just the AFC NEO, he put down 180whp. Once he go the piggy back from comptech, he made 285whp right the way.

to swap a tii in an na is a **** load of work but one part people don't take into acount is the differential and half shafts are needed to do this alone will add 700 too you swap bill
true a t2 motor is cheap but the wiring harness an tranny are not so unless you have about 2400 to do it right it may turn out to be more of a pain

but there is hope google rx7 super charger it is half the price of a t2 swap 1200 to be exact an is reilable enough to drive every day just doesnt have a cool bov lol just check out ya chocies lol

Rotaries can handle up to 20psi.... Turbo ones. NA rotaries can maybe handle 10-12 maybe. Like everyone else is saying, buy a TII. Check out these sites also if your not a member already. They are real helpful and for the most part they know what there talking about

Very true about the TII driveline. Being on a budget though you can use the NA stuff while you save for the TII parts but you cant really beat on it to much or you'll be really good at swapping trans like I was .


I think the Supercharger is not such a good idea. They quit making them cause they were spining them to high and burning them up. Again you'll be getting into the driveline issues. The NA trans will only hold about 200HP. Good luck with which ever way you go.

i beg to differ my friend check out the chamden super charger this is this lastest kit made for the 13b an 9000 rpm
also tha na trans can hold up to 255 crank hp but then again it is what you wish too use it for like my rx7 is a autocross grip whore so the ubber charger is great for this but if this guy is like every else in a rwd import an wants to drift a turbo would do better

of course there is always the option of putting a sbc or other v8 for bout the same money and more hp/tq potential

no it doesn't , everything it ripped out and jb welded lol. maybe thats why i have terrible gas mileage when im not even pushing it

With using a FD motor you will need to buy a single as well. I put a 13BRE (basicly the same motor) in my last FC and the twins would work. You can make the twins work but for the time and hassle its not worth it IMHO. If your short on cash you can run a stock TII mani and turbo but you'll be down on power. IDK about the FD trans on mounting up to your car. I think its longer but not 100%. You could sell the trans and buy a TII trans so you know you wont have issues. also in chaging the trans you'll need the clutch. I hope you have another car to use for about a week or so casue even if you get everything you need there will still be bugs to work out. Not trying to disscourage you at all, just letting you know theres alot of work to do this kinda of swap. I put well over 10K in mine before the driveline stuff and it never ran. Part was my fault cause I didnt do enough research but the guy that wired my car didnt know what he was doing.

I have years of experience with both N/A and turbo rotarys. Believe me when I say, it is not worth it to turbo your N/A. You will spend a lot less to simply buy a TII and sell your N/A. If you are dead set on boosting the N/A, then go with nitrous instead. It will be a much cheaper option in both the short and the long run. Ask me any questions that you want about the swap.

I assume your talking about a LSX motor. and Yup. but in the long run you will get more for the car and wont have to be boosted to get power. No worries about apex seals either..... thats my thoughts on it.

The 86-88 Turbo II's using a mechanical oil-metering pump for the turbo, which was much more reliable...but the motor's themselves had heavier rotor's with lower compression than the 89-91's...

The 89-91 motors utilized an electrical oil-metering pump, which was was deemed as being less reliable than a mechanical.

On my '88 T2, we ended up having a Series 5 (89-91) block (lighter rotors/higher compression)...while utilizing the Series 4 (86-88) mechanical oil-metering pump for reliability.

It worked beautifully.

SO my point is...and as everyone else will agree....don't waste your time and money trying to turbo the N/A motor. Just purchase a 13BT out of a Turbo II. Keep in mind with your car being an '86 though, if you purchase an 89-91 motorset, there are going to be some wiring differences.
