It replaces an internal portion of the ECU and allows control of the maps that are stored within the ECU itself without altering the signal (and causing maps to be overlaid versus allowing control of a variety of parameters independently).

Sorry, there is no argument here. To call it a piggy-back is just flat out WRONG and to call it a stand-alone is just flat out WRONG.
