Well if you're not talented then yes, it's difficult to get good pics with PnS's. There are MANY reasons why a p-n-s is so much better.

1. Compact and can be stored in a glovebox and whipped out at a moments notice. Versus an expensive DSLR that requires a bag to carry and the worry that someone might crack a windshield and snag it.

2. P-n-S's are getting better in MP and lenses.

3. Tripods aren't a necessity to take good pics.

If someone can't capture a quality photo with a point & shoot then they can't with a DSLR either. Simple as that.

Using a tripod will always yield a more crisp image and using the timer or a remote while on a tripod makes it that much sharper. A tripod enables a wider aperture range too allowing more detail to be captured.

Most mid level point & shoots are more than enough camera for the average DSLR owner...better gear doesn't teach the basics like composition and how to make the most of the available light.
