It'd be easier if you'd call them rather than post here. They don't post here much at all.

Im under the impression that mahdavi doesnt do the internal engine building, they send it off to a machine shop.

    Yay for the middle man!

Yes, they use Ewing Machine Shop. Third party work is not uncommon in shops though.

On big motors and big investments, i use DFE Enterprises (who built my motor) simply because he is the BEST on the East Coast. He also has an engine dyno, which is a plus to my customers, they know their motor will be broken in and tuned before they ever get their car back. On small motor builds and internals or mild to medium engines i do it myself and we tune it here on our dyno.

Sending a head(s) or block to be machined somewhere is not sending your engine to be built elsewhere. There aren't many shops around that have a machine shop on the premises too. If a shop takes the motor out, apart, sends SOME parts out to be "machined" or "trued", then puts everything back together again........I'd say they "built" the engine in my book.

Besides, some machine shops REQUIRE they put certain things in themselves (sleeves, sometimes crank, sometimes pistons, valves/springs, etc) in order to offer a warranty.

I promise you that if you take your motor to be "rebuilt" ANYWHERE, you either A: don't have the time; or B: don't have the knowledge to do it yourself.

Everyone is a "middle man" if you really want to split hairs. No shop around here MAKES a piston from scratch. So by your definition that would make them a "middle man" too now wouldn't it, since they ordered them from somewhere else?

i just think what he means is that MM (any many other shops) dont assemble their own engines. They have a machine shop do it they dont assemble in house. as far as warranty, even i dont offer any warranty beyond a startup on a built engine. you cant warranty race parts, unless you wanna go out of business.

Which is fine, its just you better trust who puts your motors together, seen alot of bad things happen with 3rd party builders if shit goes wrong.

man this thread took a funny turn

    They dont assemble it either!

Are you sure they dont make their own pistons :jerkit:

If you are going to build a motor and you cannot do it yourself then take it to a machine shop, or a creditable**** shop that will assemble after everything has been honed, milled, etc by a MACHINE shop.

so , YAY for having him make that $$ call for someone else to dissasmble, do the machine work, and assemble your motor and bring it back to the shop so you can say "They Built" your motor, Which sucks anyways...

uh no! actually i think one of those guys tried to rip me off. i went there asking to do front end repairs on my teg...i asked if he could also find me a 98+ front bumper also and headlights, he told me i would also need hood and fenders and radiator support and the total cost would be atleast $900, when i noe all u need is bumper ans headlights....so i took the car somewhere else an vowed never to return!!...

did you want to do a jdm front end conversion? if so, then you do need the radiator support, fenders and hood. if not, then i would need more information to understand what happened.

sounds like he just wanted the 98+ front end conversion....which consists of just a 98+ front bumper and 98+ headlights.

^^^ i specifically told the dude, that i wanted a 98 conversion, when he told me it costs over $900 and that if i buy my own parts and have them install it, they would not garanteed fitment so i told them i should just put out a few more bills and get a jdm and i left... didnt wanna make a big deal cus i already asked him if he was sure like 5 times and he replied he's "done hundreds of those and that's the way to do it"

i feel there was definatley a misunderstanding with what yall talked about... myself and many others have been to MM and had no problems and have been treated very well.. I have delt with a lot of shops in the atlanta area with my last boosted car and now the supercharged S i have had nothing but great experiences with all the shops..even with one (that caught my mirage on fire)that isnt around anymore. bottom line theses shops all did great work, and like any business their will be problems that arise..so all this talk of "I heard -insert shop- does bad work, is B.S.! these shops couldnt be in business for years and years if they did.. let that do the talking, not some guy who states he got ripped off because his engine blew or threw a rod. those are most likely the people who cut corners with parts or did something that the car/motor was not designed to do.. so in short, take it to the shop you want but dont bad mouth shops that you have never taken your car to or have heard rumors about...

$900 does seem very high, especially when all the parts are around $200 at the most used.

they are right, you supply parts they cant guarantee fitment, i agree with that. THey might be ordering OEM parts which is NOT the same as CERTIFIT. so that may be why the price was inflated. Like for isntance, if someone says they can do a timing belt on your car and say the belt costs $20, then they ARENT using OEM parts. OEM timing belts are $50-65. almost triple the price of the $20 belt form autozone/pepboys/etc.

Find out what parts they were supplying, if it was certifit or second hand stuff, then that is kinda high i would agree. but it depends what their labor rate is as well. if they charge you 5 hours to put it on , adn their labor rate is $75/hour, thats roughly $400 ALREADY. just in labor.

Plus, they are a "speed" shop, why are they installing body parts lol. fuck that, i refer people to a body shop for body work

We only use ARP bolts so that's probably what you got.
When doing anything in life there's is always someone who specializes in a certain field which makes them extremely good in that field, like tranny guys, and machinest. Finding these two things and good ones at that means you have a gold mine. We send all blocks and heads out that require machining because that the machinest job. If a block is getting bored or sleeved then I always have the machinest put it together because he'll do it better than I can since he cut everything, and if you trust him. However, if a block is getting replacement pistons and rods with a block gaurd and minor build up then we do that in house. We have built many motors that way, but 90% is sent to the machinest. We only have them install crank, pistons, and rods, and I assymble everything else. I have been blessed with finding a great machine shop and trust him with anything. We have used them for over seven years and have had not one problem, and we're talking over 1000 motors easy. The race car's motors lasted the whole season, and I don't plan on touching it. He builds the best short blocks around. He remans heads, but doesn't do any custom port work, simply because he's covered up. I send those jobs to KMS and he has done beautiful work for me also for 7 years.

So after my long story, the moral is: if you don't have to do it or don't have time, then find someone good as shit to do it. I build all the cars and do some swaps, but there is no way I can build the motors, build the trannies, and build the cars, and make one quality product unless I am only doing a few a year. That's why we have engine builders, and tranny guys. Because anyone who can say they can do it all, means they are lacking somewhere, or not giving 100% in each field. Sorry to bore you, had some time to kill, rare. Good pm.

As for the 98 front end conversion, I agree it should be taken to a body shop. But we have done JDM conversions like the one on our employees then had it painted, but it turned out beautiful, thanks to good parts. I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding with my sales guy, he probably had a 99 civic conversion in mind.
I use Napa T-belts on even the race cars, and have been since day one and had not one break or fail. So it depends on what aftermarket brand you go with, there are actually a lot of reputable brands that are just as good and much cheaper.

Oh, and to add to the topic,

I also see no problems with using the Napa or Goodyear timing belts when the customer is not trying to pay OEM prices. Also, getting the Shortblock rotating assembly done at the Machine shop is the best bet unless you have a full machine shop in-house (which is really impractical, unless one of the main focus is engine sales). That way the machine guy can focus and machine-to-fit all the non-oem parts to work perfectly together right there. Then you give it back to the shop for final assembly. It's the same thing that I just did with the sleeved H22A that I am hoping to push 380-400whp out of.

What performance guy has the time to start assembling a race motor himself and then keep running back and forth to the machine guy if the parts are'nt all fitting together perfect.
