LOL, I have seen people with 350D's out shoot people with 40D's. It is not all about the bodies. And I think you meant the 50D.Originally Posted by dtmcnamara
To the OP, you can pick up a used 350D for a couple hundred now so depending on what kind of TV you could be getting an even trade or really screwed. What all is coming with the camera? Lenses, grip, extra batteries, CF cards? How many actuations are on the body? The 350D is only rated to about 50k actuations.

ok sorry for the threadjack, but ap, i have a minolta slr... is there a way to tell how many actuations ive put on it? im just curious as to how many shots ive taken in the past couple years
I have a Sony wega 50" Lcd that i BOUGHT A FEW YEARS AGO FOR $ 2700
Camera comes w/ extra lens ...card and the box and everything he had when it came new. The guy is on this forum
Not sure if it will work but you might try shooting a jpg image and load it straight into flickr. Do not do any processing just load it right out of the camera. Make sure your Exif is on and recording and if it is, it might show how many actuations you have in the Exif display fields on Flickr. At least it worked for me on CanonOriginally Posted by collins

So what camera would you buy on a budget??????????
Really depends on how serious you want to get. Just remember bodies are disposable, glass lasts forever.
You were pmd 110 times Lol sorry but let me know what you think ....I am not trying to get too serious but I need a starter camera.Originally Posted by A.P. Photography
Really comes down to preference and how the camera feels in your hands. Go to DPreview and research some of the entry level DSLR's. Nikon and Canon both have great enty levels. If you are just wanting to do hobby shooting then there is no reason to go overboard on a higher end DSLR when an entry level will give you good results and still have a lot of room for you to grow. Do some research on them and then head to Wolf and get them in your hands and see which one feels better.
I know nothing, and it sucks![]()
buy this...

same camera i use, but i have different lens. for samples of my work with my D50 click the smiley in my sig.
what exactly is your mom regretting? A novice photographer doesn't need more features than the 350 has.Originally Posted by dtmcnamara

x2 That is exactly what I shoot with. No fancy lenses yet; just that. Check out my work... click my sig.Originally Posted by CH@Dbee

So Nikon is the way to go huh?
I found a Nikon on the best buy auction website for $400 w/ warranty.....of course they were open box but I think it was a nikon d70 s 6.1 mp slr w/ lens
The other was a sony d slr a100k w80 7.2 mp
Sony makes a good enty level that is idiot proof. Downside is if you want to ever upgrade the lens then it is wayyyy to expensive.Originally Posted by THE KREEP
Canon/Nikon both make great enty levle cams (see Speedminded, Chadbee and Kustoms pics) and the lenses can be upgraded with the canon costing slightly less. The entry levels will give you lots of room to grow.
Stay away from anything open box from a retail store like Best Buy, Circuit City as most of the time the sensor has been touched and can have more problems than it is worth.Originally Posted by THE KREEP
So a d40 or a d50 would do the job? I have no prior photo experience.
The canon rebel eos xt 350d that i mentioned in post #1 wouldnt be ok for me? It's 2.5 years old and I am not sure if I want something that out of date.......
The camera is not really out of date. It is an older camera but still very capable. I have one as a back up. It would still work but you have to watch how many actuations are on the body. As for which one, go to WOLF and HOLD the camera and see which one feels better to you. Believe it or not, one might feel more comfortable to you than the other.

You have TONS of great Minolta Glass to choose from and they will ALL benefit from The Sony's "Super Steady Shot" Image stabilization which many consider the best in the business.
Sigma and Tamron make decentglass for them as well that isnt too much. The big money comes with the big glass (or specialty glass- a la Wide Angle)and if you step up to the Zeiss stuff.
I have a Sony a100 and an a700.
Glass in my bag:
Minolta 50mm f1.4
Minolta 11-18mm f4.5-5.6
Sigma 24-60mm f2.8
Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 (APO G)
Minolta 100-300mm f5.6

I would recommend you hit up KEH.com. Great prices on used equipment, but it is all inspected and cleaned, etc before being re-sold.
They UNDERrate their equipment. My a700 was rated as EX+, but it was Like New and still had all of the stuff-- basically an open box. Everything was still in wrappers, never been used.

get a nikon d50, bang for the buck it really can not be beat IMHO.
the d40 is a newer camera but wont autofocus with some nikon lens. for that reason i say go with the older d50. just because its old doesnt mean it doesnt work well![]()
i agree, i have friends that have even bought BGN items from them and you had to REALLY look for any imperfections.Originally Posted by atlantamx3

It'd be fine, in all honesty, ignore everyhting everyone in this thread has said. Go out, play with some until you find one that feels good in your hands and has a great menu layout, then buy it knowing ALL DSLRs CAN PRODUCE THE SAME QUALITY SHOTS (with the exception of high noise performance, in which case entry level DSLRs are all about the same anyway). It'll be the lenses that matter more than the body, so buy a comfortable body, go cheap as you can, and spend the money on good glass(often will cost you as much or more than the camera, if that's too big to swallow, utilize the versitility of a non DSLR superzoom).Originally Posted by THE KREEP

So ignore everything that was said in this thread but you are going to say exactly what I have already said in this thread.Originally Posted by 87 Turbo II

As for my Sony statement, I was going by the Sony Glass. I had no idea that you could use Minolta glass on the Alphas. I stand corrected on that aspect.![]()
