Thumbs up *Pics* w/ my new Nikon 18-200mmVR lens for my Nikon D70 *GA Aquarium*

If any of you own a Nikon D70/70s/50/200 this lens is a definite must have for an all around carry lens! It's a lot better than the standard 18-70mm kit lens and only half an inch or so bigger in length. I just bought the 18-200VR lens a week ago, and I finally used it. The VR does work as advertised. You are able to take pictures handheld 4 stops lower with the VR feature without the need for a tripod. I am very happy and impressed with the lens. VR was turned on for most of the shots. If you don't know, VR stands for vibration reduction. There is a motor inside the lense to counteract any movement to reduce blur at slow shutter speeds. This lens is SICK! The bad part is the lens is about $750! But technically, you are getting two lenses in one and the VR feature alone is worth it.

    Exposure Time = 1/25" F Number = F5.6 @ 200mm

Same picture as above but with VR turned off.

A basket in my house. Just showing how much a difference the VR makes. Shot indoors with very low light and handheld.

    VR OFF

    Exposure = 0.625" F5.3 @ 90mm

    VR ON

Nice! I'm glad we got another photography nut here.
    That lens looks crazy.

I've got a rebel xt, but a co-worker of mine shoots with a D70, and says great things.

Very nice work at the aquarium.

I'm a photo nutt too . What exactly is VR? I just got a Nikon D50 and am lovin it. I may have to check out that lense. Do you photo geeks have any suggestions for tripods? I was mad at myself tonight at the Varsity for not having a tripod so i need to get one. Not really sure what to buy and what my options are...

VR stands for vibration reduction. There is a motor inside the lense that comes on to counteract movement so you can get a steadier shot with less lens shake/blur when you are forced to use a lower shutter speed in low light conditions.

    FROM NIKON

    VR
    Vibration Reduction (VR)
This innovative VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster.* It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens’ VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans — no special mode is required.

Check out this link. It shows you how VR works. has a few example shots with and without VR activated.

Oh yes... I must have... Does it work as well for night shots? If so would that mostly eliminate the need for a tripod at car meets like this? I have a decently steady hand but not quite like a tripod...

I don't care how steady you can be. When taking night shots with crappy lighting, without a flash, you will always get shitty shots with shake and blur. A tripod is the only way to stop that or the VR lens can definetly help. It isn't a miracle worker, you will learn the limitations of it, but you can take shots at night that with before you were FORCED to use a tripod. Hell look at the night time shot from nikon. I'd say that's pretty amazing considering it's hand held.

I want that damned lens. I hate switching from an 18-55 then a 70-300. I might sell both of those to get this one. That VR is amazing.
