    VR
    Vibration Reduction (VR)
This innovative VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster.* It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens’ VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans — no special mode is required.

Check out this link. It shows you how VR works. has a few example shots with and without VR activated.

Oh yes... I must have... Does it work as well for night shots? If so would that mostly eliminate the need for a tripod at car meets like this? I have a decently steady hand but not quite like a tripod...

I don't care how steady you can be. When taking night shots with crappy lighting, without a flash, you will always get shitty shots with shake and blur. A tripod is the only way to stop that or the VR lens can definetly help. It isn't a miracle worker, you will learn the limitations of it, but you can take shots at night that with before you were FORCED to use a tripod. Hell look at the night time shot from nikon. I'd say that's pretty amazing considering it's hand held.
