I am in the market for a new camera. Seems like the D40X and the Rebel xti are in my price range. Are they the best, they are from what I'm reading, but which of the two should I get?

According to Taketomi, true VIP style tuning is limited to only 10 Nissan and Toyota models: Nissan President, Cima, Gloria, Cedric and Fuga; Toyota Celsior, Century, Aristo, Crown and Majesta.
This question usually starts a pissing match between Nikon and Canon owners. Both cameras are good options. When I bought my DSLR I had to decide between Canon and Nikon. I had 2 deciding factors that made me choose Canon. Most of the people I know had a Canon so that means we could trade out lenses, flashes, etc. The second deciding factor was what I would be doing with the camera. I do a lot of low light pictures and at the time the reviews were saying that the XTi did very well in low light. My suggestion instead of a camera brand is to decide by what type of pictures you take and what your friends use so you can try their stuff to decide what you like.
Search, this questions has been asked many times before in here.
As for camera, buy a Polaroid........hahah roid.
Go pick one up and see which ones feels better in your hand. ha
Both are good cameras. I ended up with an XTi beacuse I was very familiar with previous Canon cameras and the menus, etc were familiar. Alot comes down to personal taste.
Rich...Bob...Stan...?????
Well, the type of pics would basically vary. I will probably take some night shots, but mainly recreational pics. Parties, trips, indoor and out, so it's rough to say. Basically rookie type pics, I guess.......

I was in the same boat except it was XTi vs XT vs d40 vs d40x. I eventually ended up with the XTi because I wanted the larger LCD, easier controls(for me) and better lens selection. The lens motor for the Nikon's is in the lens, thus you will spend more on the lenses if you want auto focus. This kind of sucks and means that while every other nikon shooter can use whatever you are limited in your lens selection(This is only to a point obviously bur something to be considered)
You would be better off with the D40. The D40x is not really an "upgrade". There are some new features.
Read the review here. He explains why you are better with better glass and a d40 than the d40x.

I ended up with the XTi AKA 400D. I know have the 18-55mm Kit Lens, Canon 50mm/Nifty Fifty, Tamron 70-300m and assorted filters and got lens hoods for all of them. Ended up with some good shots so far.

The best advice, period. Why? Because it's your starter camera. Whatever feels best in your hand would probably be the best way to go. I made the mistake of NOT trying, though I was given this suggestion by many, and now I regret getting the Canon XTi over the Nikon. You will NOT be able to fully master whatever dSLR camera you're going to get for awhile. Get something within budget with a set-aside money for better lenses.Originally Posted by Justin.
I dropped over $800 for a brand new XTi with kit lens not realizing the quality of the crappy kit lens. Soon discovered that lens is where it's at. If I had to do it all over, I'd get something even more "basic" like the Canon 350D and get a nice walk-around 'L' lens ($1000+).
You'll get used to the control functions regardless of its brand. Nothing is comfortable to use at first, but with time you'll soon find yourself deleting and adjusting without even looking at the controls so try not to limit yourself on what's 'easier' at the first look.
Spare majority of your money on buying better lenses. I kid you not, you'll grow sick out of the kit lens real quick. On a side note, camera hobby can get really expensive so be prepared to financially support your enthusiasm
Best of luck on what you choose. Your first shots may look worse than your traditional P&S (point and shoot) camera, but don't be disappointed. Quality images come from experience. Have fun!![]()

The guy is considering the d40 and d40x with kit lens and you recommend a 500 dollar body and 1000 dollar pro lens.
Why not a Rebel XTi with kit lens and a nifty fifty? That is a GREAT start... Or even a rebel XT body only with nifty fifty.
Also in my experience an dSLR on full auto will turn in better shots 99.9% of the time over a P&S. Shoot on full auto for awhile and see what it does. Then venture out. Learn what each setting does and eventually you get into full manual
Jump on Pixel-Peeper.com and do an advanced search. Rebel XTi(400D) + 18-55... Change to the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and results improve... Sample of "crappy kit lens"
