The guy is considering the d40 and d40x with kit lens and you recommend a 500 dollar body and 1000 dollar pro lens.
Why not a Rebel XTi with kit lens and a nifty fifty? That is a GREAT start... Or even a rebel XT body only with nifty fifty.
Also in my experience an dSLR on full auto will turn in better shots 99.9% of the time over a P&S. Shoot on full auto for awhile and see what it does. Then venture out. Learn what each setting does and eventually you get into full manual 
Jump on Pixel-Peeper.com and do an advanced search. Rebel XTi(400D) + 18-55... Change to the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and results improve... Sample of "crappy kit lens"
