HOw to protect ur work
From the internet thiefs, that like to steal your photos and or photoshop work?
I got a friend of mine who is doin his thing as a graphic designer, but he recently has had a issue with the ppl hes doin work for takin his work and just changin **** around. People are gonna copy i know, but what the best and easiest way to protect your work, and be able to show it to the world?

naw, he was gonna, after i suggested it to him yesterday.
but is there a way around it for someone to still copy his work? like tke the pic to PS, and remove the transparent words..

but just make it really big, or a whole bunch of small text or something

yea i can see that being a problem to remove..lol BUt what about making pics where they cant be right clicked? or saved at all

If he's doing the work for someone this what does he expect? He's selling the images to them right?
You can easily get around that with viewing the source and finding the link if it's HTML or a simple screen capture if it's a flash. If it's really an issue then just give out a small resolution sample with a watermark on it.
Bingo. Even though you can modify it but if someone gets caught doing that they are screwed...

well he was supposedly doing a album cover for a guy, and he did a few covers, and the guy picked one and said he wanted to get that one, than later on he says.. well naw, im gonna go with something else..and it was just his same design just stuff moved around...

you can actually edit the metadata of the image in photoshop to include all of his information, copyright, etc
was he getting paid for these designs? If so, with the 1st design, are the photos stock photos that he purchased or photos he took himself, or photos used with permission?
If not then he is doing essentially the same thing the others are doing with his work.
If the images are owned by him or had permission to use them, then yeah looks like someone is rippin him off.
yea this work comes after, long discussions back and forth with the person, and them giving him pics etc... to use. So all the photos are with permissions, it was like "hey do this for me" he does it, than the like it, than they come back with soemthing else.. as u see.. which is obviously his work just re arranged.. i saw him make those designs from scratch...
I'm a graphic designer and I can tell you this happens alot, I did some work for Dapper Magazine (owned by Grand Hustle TI Label) and they did the same thing to me as well, and well theres not much you can do about it unless you get a lawyer. In my case I decided against proceeding to get the money for the design because I did not want to burn my name, and companies will do this.
Watermarks, meta data, and locking or out the right click option for your websites, where they help keep people from taking your ****, its not 100% effective, for example:
If you do have it setup for no right click, all the person has to do is take a screen shot and they instantly have your work, they didnt have to right click it at all. Meta Data is about worthless now Ok so lets say you have all your info present in your Meta Data, you think your safe? No, in order to get around meta data its pretty simple, you simply have to bring the image into photoshop, and copy it into a new file, the meta data will not transfer over with the new file. Water marks will help give you credit, but with the example you showed us, if the client provided the imagery, its easy to get around a water mark because all your doing is copying the typography over the actual picture, which any half decent designer should be able to do so.
The government really doesn't care enough about the arts/design to help protect it as much as they do music etc... Theres the wonderful 20% clause, any design, art, piece what ever can be used, if its been changed by 20%. Which from what you showed us I would say would count.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT DOING DESIGN/ART:
Contracts, YOU MUST GET ONE!!! Doing any work for anyone without a contract is retarded. I understand we all have friends out here, or peeps we think were cool with, but friends or not a contract is a must before any work is done. Contracts will also scare the people off who would try to steal your work, look online there are plenty of contracts out there that are free to use and easy to manipulate to what you need them to do. Also NEVER do any work with no money up front, for one if this happens to you again, atleast you made some money off it, two it will keep people like this away for the majority of the time, cause if there going to steal your work then they certainly wont want to pay you upfront even if your only charging them 30-50% up front.
I also recommend becoming a member of the GLA (Georgia Lawyers for Arts) its 15-50 dollars a year and will help you tremendously with legal help, cause we all know we cant go to a lawyer every time something little occurs, BUT if your a member of the GLA you don't have to worry about the cost, because the little money you pay a year covers the cost
Hope this help, but lets face it, i've been working in design for the past 5 years, and it happens, you just have to be prepared for it and understand that there are "biters" out there who steal other styles/work as there own, its been happening for years and no form of art is safe, Hell look at graffiti, how many lil artist out there you think have bitten off styles from totem, hense.
Your friend can try to contact his client and see if there willing to work with him about some type of compensation for his work, but other than that, theres not much he can do now. He could try to burn the clients name and let people know what they've done, but in all honestly people dont care about the design on a cd cover or a flyer when it comes to music, and they dont care that the label stole the design. People care about the music on cd, and dont really care if the label is a thief or not.
