    Default Bishops Bend the Rules

MILWAUKEE - Michael O'Leary doesn't need to choose between sinning and nibbling this St. Patrick's Day. O'Leary will enjoy his corned beef on Friday with a clear conscience — thanks to a special dispensation from another Irish-American, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee.

Dolan is among dozens of bishops — from Green Bay, Wis., to Arlington, Va., to Chicago to Boston — granting one-day dispensations from Lenten rules that prohibit Roman Catholics from eating meat on Fridays to observe the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In many cases, the bishops are asking for a similar day of penance in exchange for relaxing the rules this Friday.

Many bishops offered the same deal the last time St. Patrick's Day fell on a Friday during Lent — in 2000. The Archdiocese of New York has always extended a dispensation when the calendar lined up because St. Patrick is the patron saint of the archdiocese, spokesman Joseph Zwilling said.

None of this matters at all. Its all man made up nonsense. There is no Biblical teaching to give up meats or anything else for Lent. There is no Biblical teaching called Lent. That is a catholic tradition made up by church leaders. Lent is actually a pagan ritual known as "weeping for tammuz". It is done to honor the sun god. The roman church simply "adopted" this pagan practice and infused Jesus name into it.

In a nutshell nothing any priest/pope does or does not do related to a made up religious practice should be a surprise. They can just make up some new rules.

Thats cool. I did find your question interesting. Its certainly a valid one.

The "special dispensation" mentioned in your quote is also noteworthy from another prospective. What Biblical authority gives any sinful or mortal human being (priest/bishop/pope) the authority to forgive an actual sin? The Bible teaches that only God can forgive sin. The notion of man doing so places him in the place of God....which defined by the Bible is blasphemy.

Of course in this case there is no Biblical authority for Lent so there is no sin anway.

On a side note, the term antichrist is literally defined - in place of Christ/God.

sure it might not be in the Bible but I don't see anything wrong with sacrificing something in remberance for the sacrifice Jesus made. sure it's a tradition made by man but it is the same man who does it for God.IMHO

I might agree where the person does so not knowing any better, living up to all the knowlege they have.

However, the principles of the Bible are clear. Do not ADD to Gods religion, do not SUBTRACT from it. Also, God declares he hates what the pagans do to honor their false gods and declares that His followers NOT adopt any pagan practice or do the same practices to honor Him.

If you want to give up something to honor Christ...try giving up living by ones own will and completely submit to His. That honors Him.
