Exactly. Depends on the gun. If it's the same exact gun, the .40 would recoil more. I've shot a 1911 .45 that recoiled less than both my s&w 9 and xd9. But of course you're comparing a 5in barrel .45 gun vs a 3in on my xd and 4in on my s&w.
