Unfortunately I didn't have a good experience. My teachers were ****ty, and a couple were stupid.
Two couldn't speak English.

I sat in on two classes with my friend over at Georgia State, and I kinda got a taste for what it was like to have teachers who are really trying to teach, and involve their students. AIA does have some state of the art techno gadgetry though...

Also only the culinary program at the Art Institute of Atlanta is accredited, and I'm not about to give them anymore money for a degree a future employer isn't going to recognize.

AIA recently acquired their NASAD accreditation. The more accreditations a school has, the more weight their degree carries when you go to get a job.

Honestly, and I know this from experience, potential employers could give half a **** about where your degree came from if your portfolio or demo reel is top notch.

Believe me, I know plenty of Ringling students waiting tables. They've got NASAD.

That's the beautiful thing about art schools and art careers... graduating with a 4.0 from a school that's accredited out the ying yang means nothing if your portfolio isn't amazing. And I say amazing because in today's world, you pretty much have to be the best of the best. You have to bring something to the table that others can't. Your portfolio shows that (or in some cases doesn't show it lol).

I went to SCAD for two years, but left because their program wasn't what I was looking for. I changed majors and came back to UGA.

Funny, cause all the employers I have met care about accreditation. I guess it depends on the job you want. I am in Advertising/PR/Marketing so it makes more sense for that field, I guess, rather than a graphic designer or a painter or illustrator.....? To me those things are based more on having that eye or natural artistic talent. BUT If you are a crap employee/designer/whatever then you are a crap employee/designer/whatever, that's obvious; then accreditation or not doesn't matter. TRUST that when it comes to a boss having 100 resumes to look through, the school matters...... no matter what you say. If your school sucks and everyone knows it, you may not ever get to show your portfolio. Or if your school isn't accredited and the other 99 resumes went to schools that are, they might just toss your resume in the trash before you get to show your portfolio. It's a weeding process. Also, for some larger corporate companies it's required as part of their policy to hire people from accredited schools.

I wonder what the students of Clayton County have to say about accreditation LOL. Not funny, but still a point to be made. That will be a scar for them for a while.

AIA is the ****ing McDonalds of art colleges. Just like SCAD, they will take just about anybody. I got half a free ride at ACA and a huge scholarship at Ringling for their computer animation program. It ALL comes down to talent. If you have a hundred resumes to sort through, I can see your point. You are right. But I will tell you one thing, I will never be turned down for a job just because of my diploma. That's something colleges tell you to get you to go there. I had to make a very difficult decision when deciding to go to either SCADATL or Ringling and when I chose SCAD, I knew that the deciding factor wouldn't be my diploma. It would be my portfolio and my demo reel. The animation industry isn't easy to break into, and for good reason. There are a lot of extremely talented people in it already, the market is flooded with degrees from places like SCAD and AIA.

Believe me, i think that ACA was the superior talent base, but it wasn't because of their accreditation, it's because of their admissions requirements. See how far all the talk about accreditation will get you when you are trying to make it as an artist. You will end up being bitter and angry, and without a pot to piss in. Your talents won't amount to **** if you are on such a high horse about the school you graduated from that people can't stand to be in your presence for more than five minutes. It's all about being humble.

I went to the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in NYC. I was in their Computer Art program, which consisted of 3D Animation and Modeling major and a Dynamic Media, aka. motion graphics, compositing, roto, effects, etc. Their accrediation taken directly from their website:

The thing I LOVE about that school was all their professors are some of the industries biggest names. You were basically being taught by your future bosses. It's great to have CURRENT working professionals as your facility because they are a great foot in the door. I got my first job at Psyop Inc. my second year into college because my Dynamic Media II professor was J.Bills, the lead compositor and rotoscoper for all the recent Peter Jackson movies (Lord of the Rings, King Kong, etc.) He taught me so much and helped me get my foot in the door at an early start! Soon after that, I was working and freelancing at a few production houses in New York, all because of my professors and the knowledge I got from them.

I really, REALLY recommend that school to any artist who is looking to make their art as a series, and successful career.

See here's the funny thing about that, though... if that's all you think about SCAD, then you have a very, VERY slim cross section of the population. Sure, there are the kids there who are pissing away money and bull****ting around, but SCAD is NOT easy. It's just like any school... you get out of it what you put into it... EVERY school has people who think it's a joke, that it will be easy like high school and they're just there to party and get some piece of paper that will be used as a beer coaster. From Ivy League to community colleges you find people like that. But on the other hand, you have people who take their education VERY seriously, and who take advantage of the opportunities provided to them by whatever school they attend. There's some AMAZING talent going into SCAD as well as coming out, and there's mediocre talent going in that comes out amazing. It's all in how hard the person works. So think about that before you go making generalizing statements. I'm not saying SCAD is the best place in the world, but don't put it down as being just a "party school" when there's some amazing work coming out of the place.
