I think the country is ready for a black president, i dont think it will do anything. Obama (even though i would never vote for him) is intelligent, articulate, and definetly a good speaker and can gather support.
To be honest, im a republican, and i wont vote because i cant stand any of the candidates. Obama an hillary are so far left and mcain is so far right, none of them excite me.
on the subject of racism, i think it would actually help the black community to have a REAL figure to look up to. That is if they dont bastardize him like they did condoleeza rice. I wont care if a Black man is president, as long as he does a GOOD JOB.
Racism wont happen unless people make an issue out of it. If this becomes the "we finally got our guy in" then we are in trouble.
The problem is, can Obama win, and still keep the respect from the minorities (not just blacks). Or will he be categorized as an uncle tom or "selling out" if he doesnt keep it "real".
I know that sounds harsh, but if you are older you know what im implying.
If Obama wins, he has some pretty hard years ahead of him, a dwindling economy, housing market, recession, trade, racism, healthcare, etc. I think racism is last on the list of those things.
